OCEANSIDE ICE ARENA
History

Oceanside Ice Arena opened in 1974. The arena has been home to Desert Youth Hockey Association since 1975 and the Arizona State University hockey program since its inception in 1985.

When the arena fell on hard times in the mid 1980’s DYHA stepped up and took over the lease of the building and land and has continued to operate the arena to this day. We are the ONLY arena in Arizona operated by a youth hockey association. DYHA and OIAare governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

When the Phoenix Coyotes moved to the Valley in 1996 the NHL team practiced here at Oceanside for their first 2 seasons. Prior to the Coyotes, Oceanside was a popular practice rink for NHL teams stopping in the Valley for golf and relaxation on their way to play the LA Kings.

Currently, DYHA has 14 youth travel hockey teams and ASU has an NCAA D1 team and 2 ACHA teams plus a Prospect team playing in the adult league.

Oceanside Adult Hockey League (formerly Summit Hockey League) was founded in 2000. What started out with 4 teams and one weekly adult instructional class has grown to 34 teams and 3 weekly classes.

Refrigeration Package & Ice
Oceanside has two 12-cylinder semi-hermetic Carrier compressors powered by two 150 HP electric motors with a 150 ton capacity chiller barrel and a cooling tower. Refrigerant is circulated through the sand floor by a 90 HP electric motor.

The refrigerant is typically going out to the ice sheet at 17 degrees and returning at 19 degrees. A loss of 2-4 degrees while circulating through the ice sheet is common depending on the season. The surface of the ice is typically at 22 degrees. The ice is maintained at a constant thickness of 3-4 inches. We carry 3-4 inches compared to an NHL arena’s 1-2 inch ice due to the extremely busy hockey schedule here.

Why is it so cold in here?
Oceanside is known as one of the coldest rinks in the country. Is that because of the 40 degree temperature difference between inside the rink and outside? Maybe that’s part of it but Oceanside is very cold, especially during hockey season. A low ceiling and energy efficient block wall construction is the primary reason for colder temperatures. Also contributing is the lack of dehumidification system which makes for higher humidity inside and which makes you feel cold. Unfortunately they cannot accommodate frequent requests to turn down the A/C or turn up the heat. The main part of the arena does not have HVAC. The temperature is driven by the massive slab of ice.

Bleacher heaters
New for the 2015-16 season are spectator heating for the south and east bleachers. The heaters will be on when conditions warrant, so long as ice conditions are not compromised.

PARKING
·      Guests, staff, and officials can park in the parking lot directly East of the arena.
·      If the East parking lot is full, an overflow parking lot is located just South East of the arena at Big Surf.
·      Teams and team buses park in the designated parking lot directly North of the arena.
·      Taxis and Ubers can pick up and drop off in the East unpaved parking lot located between the East parking lot and McClintock.

PRE-GAME
Oceanside Ice Arena opens 60 minutes before opening faceoff, so come in early and grab a seat in one of the coldest ice rinks in the country.
