Nine Sun Devil Softballers Honored On Pac-12 All-Conference Team

TEMPE, Ariz.--Nine members of the fourth-ranked Arizona State University softball team received Pac-12 All-Conference honors, the league office announced Wednesday.  Senior pitcher Dallas Escobedo, who has been named one of the 10 finalists for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, earned First Team All-Conference honors alongside junior catcher Amber Freeman.

Escobedo has been a driving force for the Sun Devils all season long with 22 wins and an ERA of 1.85.  Freeman currently leads the team in hits (67), slugging percentage (.696), and batting average (.424), which is the seventh-best batting average in ASU single-season history.

Earning Second Team All-Conference honors were senior pitcher Mackenzie Popescue and junior third baseman Haley Steele.  In her final season with the Sun Devils, Popescue has a record of 20-3 and an ERA of 2.15.  Steele has become ASU’s go-to power hitter this season alongside Freeman, as she leads the team in RBIs (47), is tied for second in home runs (11), and has a slugging percentage of .600.

Earning her first collegiate award, shortstop Chelsea Gonzales was ASU’s lone rookie on the All-Freshman Team.

Honorable Mention accolades were given to junior outfielder Elizabeth Caporuscio, senior shortstop Cheyenne Coyle, senior outfielder Alix Johnson, and senior outfielder Bailey Wigness. Caporuscio paces the team with 17 doubles this season, good for second in ASU history, while Coyle leads the team with 12 long balls this year.  Coyle has a career total of 32 homers at ASU, despite playing just two seasons for the Sun Devils.

Johnson paces the Pac-12 in walks this season with 48 to her credit, while Wigness is wrapping up her career with a team-leading 13 steals on the season.

Next up, the Sun Devils make their 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament when they host the Tempe Regional from May 16-18 as the No. 9 seed overall.  Arizona State will open the regional on Friday, May 16, against Ivy League Champion Dartmouth at 3 p.m. PT at Farrington Stadium.
