PROVO, Utah – In a similar scenario it faced in the 2025 regular season finale, Sun Devil Soccer will enter Thursday’s league match at No. 16 BYU (7 p.m. MST/ESPN+) needing a win and help around the league to finish the regular season in the top eight of the conference’s table and earn a berth into the Big 12 Conference Soccer Tournament.

Arizona State (4-5-1 in league play this season) will travel to Provo sitting just one point back of tying West Virginia (4-4-2) for eighth place in the conference standings. A win over the Cougars combined with the Mountaineers either losing or tying Cincinnati (2-6-2) would result in ASU leapfrogging WVU and securing a spot in next week’s Big 12 Conference Soccer Tournament on the final day of the regular season.

An appearance in the conference’s postseason tournament would be the first for Arizona State since the 2024 season, when it fell to sixth-seeded Kansas, 2-1, in the opening round of the tournament.

Television

  • Greg Wrubell (play-by-play) and Carla Swensen-Haslam (analyst) will call Thursday night’s action on ESPN+, which will be available to stream on either the Disney+, ESPN or Hulu apps, while Cameron Clark will serve as the match’s sideline reporter.

Series History

  • Arizona State will be looking for its first win over BYU in Provo since Sept. 4, 2004, when Katie Leahy capped her brace with a game-winning goal during the 51’.
    • A victory for ASU would also level the series record between the Sun Devils and Cougars in matches played in Provo to 2-2-0.
  • A Sun Devil win on Thursday would mark the first time Arizona State has won back-to-back matches over the Cougars throughout the eighth-match series history.
  • The Sun Devils will be making their first trip to Provo to play BYU since Sept. 12, 2024, when the Cougars earned a 1-0 win courtesy of an Avery Frischknecht game-winning goal during the 43’.
    • The 2024 matchup between the two programs also marked the first Big 12 match for ASU after joining the league prior to the start of the season.
  • Second-year Sun Devil Addison Baltodano will enter Thursday’s match as the only active Arizona State women’s soccer student-athlete to have scored a goal against BYU after scoring the game-winning goal during the 50’ of ASU’s 2-1 upset win over then-No. 10 BYU on Sept. 18, 2025.

Kicking Off

  • A win at BYU on Thursday would mark the fifth victory in league play for Arizona State this season, tying for the most conference wins in a single season for the Sun Devils since 2023.
    • Five conference wins for ASU would also tie for the most in a single season under 10-year head coach Graham Winkworth.
      • The Sun Devils also won five conference matches in 2018 (5-5-1), 2022 (5-5-1 and 2023 (5-5-1).
  • A victory over the Cougars would push Arizona State’s season win total to 10, marking the first time the Sun Devils have won 10-or-more matches in back-to-back seasons since 2002 (12-7-2) and 2003 (13-5-3).
  • With her next assist, Amy Medley will be credited with her seventh on the season, the second most by a freshman in program history and the most by a freshman Sun Devil since Manya Makoski was credited with nine in 19 matches throughout the 2002 season.
    • Medley would become the first freshman defender to be credited with 7-or-more assists in a single season in Arizona State history.
        • In fact, Medley will enter Thursday’s match with six assists, already the most by a freshman Sun Devil defender in a single season in program history.
  • A win for Arizona State on Thursday would give Sun Devil head coach Graham Winkworth his 100th career conference win.
    • 37 – North Alabama
    • 33 – Arizona State
    • 29 – South Alabama
  • Arizona State is looking for its first ranked road win since March 26, 2020, when the Sun Devils knocked off then-No. 3 UCLA, 2-1, on a Cori Sullivan golden goal in the 99’ of overtime in Los Angeles.
