Soccer preview: ArizonaSoccer preview: Arizona

TEMPE – Looking to defend its territory, Sun Devil Soccer will look to do its part towards the Territorial Cup on Friday, Oct. 30, when Arizona State hosts the Arizona Wildcats (5-7-5, 2-2-3) at 7 p.m. MST on ESPN+.

Television

  • Jordan Hamm (play-by-play) and Joe Lowery (analyst) will call Friday night’s action on ESPN+, which will be available to stream on either the Disney+, ESPN or Hulu apps.

Series History

  • Arizona State will be looking for its first win over Arizona since Nov. 4, 2022, when the Sun Devils used second-half goals from Eva van Deursen (52’) and Lucy Johnson (79’) to earn a 3-2 victory against the Wildcats.
    • The 2022 win for ASU also marked the last time the Sun Devils beat UA in Tempe.
  • The Sun Devils enter Friday’s match with an 18-12-2 all-time record against the Wildcats in a series that dates back to Oct. 15, 1996, when ASU won the first meeting between the two, 4-2, in Tucson.
  • With a clean sheet result this week, the Arizona State defense will have prevented Arizona from scoring in back-to-back matches for just the second time in the series history and first time since Oct. 16, 1998 (ASU 2, UA 0) and Aug. 31, 1999 (ASU 4, UA 0).
  • A win over Arizona on Friday would give Arizona State its 11th all-time win over the Wildcats in Tempe, the most wins over a single opponent inside Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in program history.
    • Arizona State, entering Friday, has beaten both Arizona and Oregon State 10 times in Tempe, the only two teams the Sun Devils have knocked off double-digit times in Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
  • Friday’s match will mark the first time Arizona State and Arizona have played on the same calendar day (Oct. 30) in back-to-back seasons since playing on Nov. 2 of the 2017 (UA 2, ASU 1) and 2018 (UA 1, ASU 0) seasons.
    • Last season, the two programs played to a 90-minute, 0-0 tie on Oct. 30, 2026 in Tucson.
      • 30 and Nov. 2 are the only dates throughout the series history the Sun Devils and Wildcats have played multiple times.

Kicking Off

  • If Friday night’s match pulls a repeat attendance figure around the 1,734 that watch Arizona State’s match against Colorado on Oct. 25, the Sun Devils will set a single-season total attendance record.
    • If the announced attendance on Friday is over 1,753, then the program will surpass last season’s 13,286 total attendance figure, which not only set the program’s single-season total attendance record but also marked the first time 10,000-or-more fans watched the Sun Devils play in Tempe over the course of a season.
  • If Kierra Blundell turns in a hat-trick performance against the Wildcats on Friday night, the junior forward will become the first Sun Devil to score 10-or-more goals in a single season since Nicole Douglas netted 14 in 18 matches throughout the 2022 campaign.
    • Blundell has one career hat trick: Sept. 1, 2024 against Penn.
  • While Arizona State won’t be playing on Halloween, the Sun Devils are 2-5-1 all time in matches played on Oct. 30.
    • ASU is 0-2-1 in matches played on Oct. 30 under head coach Graham Winkworth.
    • The Sun Devils last won on Oct. 30 on Oct. 30, 2011, when Sierra Cook scored during the 80’ of ASU’s 1-0 win over Washington in Tempe.
