TEMPE – After a quick trip down I-10 for a one-off neutral site contest on Thursday afternoon, Sun Devil Soccer will return to Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 6, when Arizona State takes on No. 9 North Carolina (4-1-0) at 10 a.m. MST on ESPN+
Free admission will be given to service workers who show an ID or badge. Fans can also get free admission to the match when they show a Sun Devil Football ticket from its game against Morgan State on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Television:
- Ryan Sykora (play-by-play) and Adrian Pelayo (analyst) will call Sunday morning’s action on ESPN+, which will be available to stream on either the Disney+, ESPN or Hulu apps.
Series History:
- Sunday will mark the first time Arizona State and North Carolina have played each other on a soccer pitch.
- The two teams were supposed to meet on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001 at the Women’s College Classic in Spring, Texas, but the matchup was canceled due to air travel and national security measures following the September 111th terrorist attacks.
Kicking Off:
- Sunday’s match against North Carolina will mark the first time Arizona State has played a program from the ACC since Saturday, May 1, 2020, when the Sun Devils fell at then-No. 9 Duke, 2-1, in double overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
- North Carolina will become the first ACC opponent to play Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe since Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, when ASU earned a 1-1 tie after playing two overtime sessions against then-No. 8 Virginia.
- Arizona State will be looking for its first win over an ACC program in Tempe since Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, when the Sun Devils earned a 7-0 victory over Pittsburgh behind a hat trick from Patrice Feulner and brace by Stacey Tullock.
- The match set a single-match program record for most goals in a single match (7) that has since been matched four times with the most recent occurrence on Aug. 30, 2019 against Tennessee Tech.
- A potential win over the Tar Heels on Sunday morning would be Arizona State’s first outright win against an ACC program since Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, when the Sun Devils beat Syracuse, 3-1, in the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
- A goal by Arizona State against the North Carolina defense would extend a streak of consecutive matches to begin a season with at least one goal to seven in a row, which would be the sixth-longest streak under 10th-year head coach Graham Winkworth
