TEMPE – In a blast from the past, Sun Devil Soccer will face off against Cal Poly, a program Arizona State beat in the opening round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, on Sunday, Aug. 30 (7 p.m. MST/ESPN+). The action will conclude an ongoing four-match home stand for the Sun Devils as ASU will travel to Tucson to play Dartmouth next Thursday.

Sunday night will represent the program’s “480 Night,” which gives free admission for Tempe residents, while ticket prices are $4 for all other fans. 

Television

  • Ryan Sykora (play-by-play) and Adrian Pelayo (analyst) will call Sunday night’s action on ESPN+, which will be available to stream on either the Disney+, ESPN or Hulu apps.

Series history

  • Sunday night will mark the first time Arizona State and Cal Poly have met on a soccer pitch since Nov. 14, 2003, when then-No. 14 Sun Devils beat the then-No. 20 Mustangs, 3-1, in Santa Clara, Calif., in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
    • Katie Mahoney opened the match by scoring ASU’s first goal just 18 seconds after the opening whistle.
      • 23 years later, Mahoney’s goal against the Mustangs remains the fastest goal scored by any Sun Devil in program history.
    • ASU and Cal Poly have not played in either Tempe or San Luis Obispo, Calif., thus making Sunday’s meeting the first time a match between the Sun Devils and Mustangs has been played on either Arizona State or Cal Poly’s campus.

Kicking off

  • The 7 p.m. kickoff against the Mustangs will mark the latest start time for a Sun Devil soccer match on a Sunday since playing New Mexico State at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, a span of six Sunday contests.
  • A win over Cal Poly for Arizona State would give the Sun Devils their fourth win on the season and extend a streak of consecutive seasons with 4-or-more wins to 31, every season of the program’s existence.
  • A potential clean sheet by the Sun Devils against the Mustangs would give Arizona State three consecutive clean sheets for the first time since shutting out UNLV (3-0), New Mexico State (1-0) and Pepperdine (1-0) on Aug. 28, Aug. 31 and Sept. 4, 2025, respectively.
  • A result (tie or win) during Sunday’s match against Cal Poly would mean Arizona State remains unbeaten through the first five matches of the 2026 season, extending a streak of consecutive seasons starting unbeaten through the first five matches to eight in a row.
    • 2018 (2-1 vs. New Hampshire on Friday, Aug. 31) was the last time the Sun Devils lost one of their first five matches to begin a season.
  • Sunday night is Arizona State’s “480 Night,” to honor those who live in and around the city of Tempe.
