TEMPE - The Sun Devil Men’s Basketball coaching staff added some more local flavor when it was officially announced that Casey Benson will be joining the coaching staff.

Casey Benson will serve as an Assistant Coach, as Randy Bennett continues to build a staff with some of the industry's most connected individuals who excel at evaluating and developing talent.

“Excited to add Casey Benson to our staff," Coach Bennett remarked. "As a three-time State Champion and Gatorade State Player of the Year at Corona Del Sol, he is one of the winningest high school basketball players in the history of the state of Arizona. He then went on to have an extremely successful collegiate career at Oregon. Casey is well respected in the community as a high character person and he will bring a lot to our program.”

Benson joins EJ Rowland as one of two Assistant Coaches. Rick Croy, Joe Rahon, and David Patrick were revealed as Associate Head Coaches by Bennett earlier in the offseason. All five have strong connections or experience working with Coach Bennett, providing valuable continuity during a transitional phase of the program.

"I am extremely excited to join the Arizona State coaching staff. I have always had the utmost respect for Coach Bennett and the way he has built programs and culture at the highest level with hard work, grit, and determination. I am very grateful for the opportunity to learn from him and work alongside an outstanding staff. I can’t wait to get to work and be a part of building something special here at ASU!" - Casey Benson

Casey Benson - Assistant Coach
Casey Benson is joining the program as an Assistant Coach after spending the past season in the same role at Dream City Christian, a nationally-renowned prep school located in Phoenix. Benson arrives in Tempe following a highly-decorated playing career, as he enjoyed success at every level of competition.

An Arizona High School Basketball legend, Benson established himself as one of the most decorated student-athletes to ever compete on the hardwood in The Grand Canyon State. During a four-year Varsity career at Corona Del Sol in Tempe, Benson was an integral piece of AIA Division I State Championship. He was part of one of the most dominant eras by a High School program in the history of the state, as the Aztecs won three-straight titles. Benson capped off his prep career in the ultimate fashion, not only winning another State Championship in 2014, but also taking home 2014 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year and Arizona Republic Player of the Year honors. As a senior he averaged 17.8 points per game to go along with 4.5 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, while shooting 53.6% from the field and 38.2% from three point range.

Following a prolific prep career, Benson received significant national recruiting attention. He eventually opted to play for Dana Altman at the University of Oregon. While at Oregon, the Ducks established themselves as a perennial power in the Pac-12 Conference. As a junior in 2016-17, Benson was part of the Ducks' squad that reached the program's first Final Four since 1939, which fittingly was hosted in the city of Phoenix where Benson grew up. Over a three-year career, Benson appeared in 113 total games. He finished with 90 wins in a Ducks' uniform, which at the time put him second in program history behind only Johnathan Loyd (97). Benson would spend his final year at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, helping lead the Lopes to a 22-12 record. He started all 34 games for GCU in 2017-18, a team that made a run to the WAC Tournament Championship game and earned a postseason berth in the College Basketball Invitational. Benson received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon and a Master of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Benson immediately pursued a professional career following the completion of his college eligibility. He spent his first season with Hopsi Polzela in Slovenia, eventually making stops in Finland (Korihait) and Bulgaria (BC Balkan Botevgrad). He returned to Slovenia for a stint with Zlatorog and Terme Olimia before moving to Belgium to play for Limburg United. Benson was part of a “Always Us”, an Oregon alumni-based The Basketball Tournament (TBT) team that competed in the 2022 edition. Meanwhile, his professional career continued with a move to Germany, where he suited up for Panthers Schwenningen and Dresden. He then rejoined the Belgian league to play for the Leuven Bears, where he spent a majority of his final two pro seasons.

The local high school legend returned to his roots recently, spending the past season as the Athletic Director of Dream City Christian, a prep school located in Glendale. He was also a member of the coaching staff, serving as an Assistant Coach for one of the most talented high school programs in the nation. The Dream City Christian team played a challenging national schedule and Benson was tasked with helping manage a roster with several high-profile national prospects being widely-pursued over the next several recruiting classes.

Benson is returning to his hometown of Tempe, Arizona where many of his family and friends still reside.
