TEMPE – Former beach volleyball student-athlete Maddison Holmgren has joined Sun Devil Beach Volleyball as an assistant coach, coming to Arizona State after coaching in South Carolina.

“We are thrilled to welcome Maddie to the Sun Devil Beach Volleyball family,” head coach Kristen Glattfelder said. “Throughout the hiring process, it became clear that she not only possesses a high level of beach volleyball knowledge and experience competing at the highest levels of collegiate beach volleyball, but she also has the character, energy and values that align with the culture we are continuing to build at Arizona State. Maddie understands what it takes to compete for championships, and her experiences at both FGCU and Texas will bring valuable perspective to our student-athletes. Most importantly, she is passionate about developing young women, building meaningful relationships and creating an environment where our athletes can thrive both on and off the sand. We are excited for the impact she will have on our program and can’t wait to see her get started in Tempe.”

Holmgren was an assistant coach for South Carolina for the 2025-26 season as the assistant coach. In 2026, the Gamecocks went 22-10 in their first season in the Big 12 and finished the year ranked No. 15 in the final AVCA Coaches Poll. She also has experience coaching at the junior levels.

A former student-athlete at both Florida Gulf Coast and the University of Texas, Holmgren played a key role in Texas’ rise in year three of the program’s existence in 2024, going 27-7 for the Longhorns while competing primarily on court three. Texas won the 2025 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association tournament title, with Holmgren delivering the championship-clinching point against Florida State. She would also clinch the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, a 3-2 win over California. Before her time in Austin, Holmgren played at Florida Gulf Coast for four seasons. She left the Eagles with 66 career wins, which was ranked seventh in FGCU’s 14-year history. She finished her collegiate beach volleyball career with 93 total victories.

“I am so excited to join the Sun Devil family,” Holmgren said. “I couldn’t be more grateful that Kristen is giving me this opportunity and I’m so thankful for the entire staff at ASU who have welcomed me with open arms. I’m excited to help continue building Sun Devil Beach Volleyball into a national championship-caliber program.”

Holmgren (née Parmelly) earned her bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in philosophy from Florida Gulf Coast University before completing her master's degree in communication with an emphasis in strategic leadership at Texas. She is married to Will Holmgren.
