The first day of the NCAA men's golf championships on Friday had a Sun Devil vibe to it.

Junior Connor Williams put the Sun Devils on his back with a 6-under 66 that has him tied for the lead with two others after day one of the NCAA Championshps, as ASU is tied for 12th at 3-over 291.

Williams was flawless, notching six birdies and no bogeys.

Quoting Connor Williams
On his strong opening round
“It was a focus of mine to get off to a fast start. I hit my first tee shot a little wide, but after that I was really able to put myself in great spots. Avoiding mistakes and adjusting to the weather were the keys.”

On playing in a NCAA Championship in his hometown
“Growing up down the road, this is a dream come true to be able to compete for an NCAA Championship with Arizona State here. I know the course and this weather really well, so I am trying to use that to my advantage. So far, it worked out. I have to make sure to stay focused and keep playing my game.”

On having his family here to watch him play
“That is one of the biggest benefits of playing near my hometown. I am so happy they get to watch me play. That is a big reason why I am in this position. I have a great support system and it showed today. They also do a great job of supporting the whole team as well, which makes them feel supported.”

Arizona State Men’s Golf Head Coach Matt Thurmond
On Connor Williams’ opening round
“That is what we have come to expect from Connor at this course. He is locked in when he plays here. Not many guys can judge the wind and read the greens like he can. Where he really shined was on the mental side. A tough couple of tournaments could’ve easily gotten in his head. He remained confident and played well in all facets of the game today.”
