TEMPE – Sun Devil Hockey head coach Greg Powers announced the hiring of assistant coach Jimmy Mullin ahead of the 2026-27 season on Friday morning.

“Jimmy is a rising star in our profession. I was intent on hiring a true connector who is a culture enhancer in every way and Jimmy is exactly that,” said Powers. “His ability to connect with not only recruits but players is unparalleled and he has been a coach that I have built a tremendous relationship with over the past few years to the point where this was a no-brainer hire. Couple his ability to enhance any culture he touches with his ability to connect and work so well with players, Jimmy was the perfect fit for our program at this very moment.”

Mullin, 34, comes to Tempe with multiple years of coaching experience, including two seasons as an assistant for the U.S. National Development Team, where he helped Team USA win a silver medal at the 2022 Under-18 World Championships while coaching Sun Devil hockey alumnus Cruz Lucius (2024-26) during his time with the USNDTP.

Mullin’s oversight of the U18 USNDTP roster included the development of NHL stars such as Logan Cooley, Cutter Gauthier, Lane Hutson, Ryan Leonard, Frank Nazar, Will Smith and Jimmy Snuggerud among a plethora of fellow NHL draft picks and NCAA standouts.

The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native also guided USA Hockey’s 2022 Under-17 NTDP to a World U17 Challenge gold medal in addition to later bringing them to the 2023 Clark Cup playoffs.

Mullin continued to play a vital role in the development of elite skaters across the board, including the likes of James Hagens, Cole Eiserman, Teddy Stiga, Cole Hutson, EJ Emery and the 2025-26 Hobey Baker winner, Max Plante.

Mullin later went on to spend two seasons gaining NCAA experience as the assistant men's ice hockey coach at Merrimack College from 2023-25. He most recently served as an associate head coach for the 2025-26 season with the USHL’s Fargo Force, where the team went 38-19, falling short in game seven of the Clark Cup conference finals to the Sioux Falls Stampede.

Mullin also had stints as the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets director of player development and advancement and as director of scouting for the NAHL's Chippewa Steel.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to join the men’s hockey program at Arizona State University under head coach Greg Powers. This is a special opportunity for both me and my family, and we can’t wait to become part of the Sun Devil community,” said Mullin. “The passion, vision, and culture that Coach Powers has built around this program made it an easy decision, and I’m grateful for the trust this staff has placed in me. We’re excited to get to Tempe, build meaningful relationships, and help continue pushing ASU Hockey to new heights.”

Mullin, a 2010 fourth round NHL draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, played five seasons of college hockey, including four (2011-15) at Miami University, where he was a key member of the school’s CCHA regular season championship in 2013 and first NCHC tournament championship in 2015.

He went on to finish his collegiate career at Minnesota State University Mankato, where the team won a WCHA championship in 2016 before going on to play three years (2016-19) professionally with the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings.

Mullin also played for Team USA at the 2010 World Jr. A Challenge, where he led the tournament in goals, including the game-winner in the championship game.

Mullin and his wife, Kenzie, are proud parents to their daughter, Eloise, and son, James.
