TEMPE – Arizona State University recorded a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) average of 990 over a four-year period (2021-22 to 2024-25), as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday. Since the 2015-16 academic year, ASU has averaged a 990-plus for each multiyear APR cohort.
Leading the Big 12, eight Sun Devil teams earned APR Public Recognition Awards by placing in the top-10 percent of their sport for multiyear APR: beach volleyball, men's and women’s cross country, men's and women’s golf, gymnastics, softball and volleyball.
For single year (2024-25) APR scores, 14 of the 23 sports that report APR data at Arizona State earned a perfect 1000, including 11 of the 13 women's teams.
For football, the program recorded a single year APR of 997 for 2024-25, which surpassed the previous high of 990, which was the program’s APR for 2014-15. Those are the two times that football has reached 990 or better.
The Sun Devils also had impressive multiyear APR numbers, with eight teams earning a perfect score. Within the Big 12, nine teams were in first place for their APR multiyear averages: beach volleyball, men's and women’s cross country, men's and women’s golf, gymnastics, men's swimming and diving, softball and volleyball.
There are eight Sun Devil teams who continued streaks of perfect multiyear scores. Men's golf currently has the longest streak with 12 in a row, followed by women's golf and gymnastics, both with 10 in a row. Beach volleyball has seven-consecutive perfect multiyear scores, with softball right behind them with six. Men’s cross country and volleyball continued to add to their streaks, this being their third year in row with a perfect score. Women’s cross country has a perfect multiyear score for the second consecutive year.
Since the APR measurement was implemented in 2003, ASU's average for all sports has increased from its first multiyear score of 937 to its current mark of 990.
APR tracks the academic progress of each student-athlete, including eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation, and provides a clear picture of the current academic culture for each sport as well as department-wide. The APR system includes rewards for superior academic performance and penalties for teams that do not achieve certain academic benchmarks. The NCAA annually honors teams earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The national multiyear APR score for all NCAA Division I programs is 986. The full NCAA release can be found on the NCAA website.
