CINCINNATI - In an important Big 12 matchup, Sun Devil Lacrosse (6-7, 1-1 Big 12) dominated in Saturday's 17-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats (8-6, 0-2 Big 12). Following three goals by the home team in the first four minutes, ASU outscored Cincy 11-2 in the next 30 minutes to maintain a lead and never look back.
In what would have been junior midfielder Anna Viglione's toughest draw competition of the season, she outdrew Cincinnati's Morgan Handzel 16-5. Prior to Saturday, Handzel had the next highest overall draw control mark in the conference - behind Viglione's conference-leading 152 - with 110. Like Viglione, she had thrice been named Big 12 Draw Specialist of the Week.
Offensively, Arizona State had a trio of attackers with a hat trick, while seven student-athletes found the back of the net. Teagan Ng led the charge with five goals, Lydia Oldknow and Addie Shevitz followed with three of their own. Coming into the matchup, Cincinnati's defense had held teams to 10.31 goals per game, but ASU's red-hot offense nearly doubled that mark with 17 on Saturday.
Defensively, ASU held Cincinnati's leading scorer in Paige Selhorn, to just one goal on four shots. The 21 shots taken by the Bearcats were their third-fewest shots in 14 games this season.
How it happened
Cincinnati opened the scoring with three of the game's first four goals. ASU's offense flipped the switch and went on a three-goal run to take a 4-3 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Bearcats scored with 1:40 remaining to tie the game, and no further offense resulted in a 4-4 tie after one quarter of play.
The Second quarter saw five goals, and the Sun Devils had accounted for four of them. ASU nearly held Cincy scoreless, but a goal with 2:17 on the clock had the score sitting at 8-5 at halftime.
The Sun Devils scored the first three goals out of halftime to hit double-digit scoring, and saw 11-5 lead with seconds remaining in the third. Cincinnati struck with a goal of their own with less than a minute on the clock, and the defense's scoreless quarter was no longer. The score was 11-6 heading into the final frame.
ASU could not hold the Bearcats to single digits on Saturday, as the team mounted a comeback effort that was too late. Despite four goals from Cincinnati, the visitors tacked on six of their own to pull away with the 17-10 win.
