TEMPE – Despite the Sun Devil Softball program looking to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of No. 2/5 Texas Tech, the Red Raiders bested Arizona State, 7-1, in the series finale at Farrington Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After Texas Tech (47-4) scored two runs during the top of the second, Arizona State (35-16) answered right back with an unearned run on a fielding error by Hailey Toney that allowed Ashleigh Mejia to score from second base.

Unfortunately, Texas Tech went on to score five unanswered runs to extend its one-run lead out to a six-run advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Despite making it three consecutive frames with at least baserunner following a two-out single by Tanya Windle, the Sun Devils were unable to advance a baserunner over to third base – like Yannixa Acuna was able to do during the bottom of the sixth – to attempt to cut away at its deficit.

FROM HEAD COACH MEGAN BARTLETT

“(Texas Tech’s Nijaree Canady) threw beautifully today. We hit a few pitches hard today but didn’t come up with anything when we had runners in scoring position. I actually thought Aissa (Silva) threw a pretty good game. She was using both sides of the plate, and her off-speed pitches were working today. The reality is that (Texas Tech) has a lot of All-American and All-Region hitters in one lineup and that was a little bit too much to overcome today.”

GAME NOTES

  • As a result of Kaylee Pond drawing a seven-pitch walk with one out in the bottom of the first, the Arizona State earned at least one walk in all 35 home games at Farrington Stadium throughout the 2026 season.
    • In fact, the Sun Devils have drawn at least one walk in their last 44 consecutive home games dating back to the 2025 season.
      • The last time ASU failed to earn a walk at home occurred on March 22, 2025 against then-No. 10 Arizona.
    • With an announced attendance of 2,019, this weekend’s three-game series against Texas Tech marked the first time since March 2023 against Arizona that the Sun Devils have sold out each game of a three-game series.
      • 2023: March 10 (2,045); March 11 (2,134); March 12 (2,105)
      • 2026: April 24 (2,051); April 25 (2,035); April 26 (2,019)
    • With her two-hit performance during Sunday’s contest, Arizona State’s Emily Schepp becomes the first opposing batter with a multi-hit game off Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady since Utah’s Kennedy Proctor went 2-for-3 in Salt Lakty City on April 10, 2026, a span of six consecutive pitching appearances.
    • When including her two-year stint at UCLA, Arizona State became the first opposing team to hold Kaitlyn Terry hitless over the course of an entire three-game conference series when she recorded multiple at bats during each game of the series.
    • Sunday afternoon marked the first time Tanya Windle and Emily Schepp both recorded multi-hit performances during the same game since February 20, 2026, when the duo both had two-hit outings during ASU’s win over Southern Utah.

UP NEXT

Arizona State will turn its attention towards its regular season finale next weekend when the Sun Devils travel to Provo, Utah for a three-game conference series at BYU (18-30, 7-14) that is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m MST / 6 p.m. MDT on Thursday, April 30.
