TEMPE - Sun Devil Men’s Basketball Head Coach Randy Bennett announced another addition to his coaching staff on Wednesday.

David Patrick will be joining the program as an Associate Head Coach, as Bennett adds yet another highly-respected and experienced leader to his coaching staff.

“I am excited to announce David Patrick as one of our associate head coaches,” Coach Bennett remarked. “With our previous time working together, I have developed a lot of trust in David. He brings great experience, builds strong relationships, and has tremendous energy that will be extremely beneficial to the program.”

Patrick joins Rick Croy and Joe Rahon, who were revealed as Associate Head Coaches by Bennett earlier in the offseason. All three have previously worked with Coach Bennett, providing valuable continuity during a transitional phase of the program.

“My family and I are extremely excited to reunite with Randy Bennett,” Patrick reflected. “Coach Bennett has had a significant impact on my journey, and I have great respect for the way he builds programs—with discipline, toughness, and a clear identity. What excites me most is the alignment across the entire staff and our shared vision for what this program can become. Arizona State has everything in place to compete at the highest level in the Big 12 Conference and I’m eager to get to work alongside this group as we pursue Big 12 championships and build something special.”

David Patrick - Associate Head Coach
David Patrick is joining the program as an Associate Head Coach after spending the past two seasons in the same role at LSU. Silver Waves Media named him one of their Top-100 Most Impactful High Major Assistants of 2026. Patrick has over 20 years of coaching experience at the Division I collegiate, Olympic, and FIBA levels. The Australian has extensive domestic and International connections that make him one of the most successful recruiters in the new era of college basketball.

Patrick has recruited 11 players who have played in the NBA (including seven draft picks – four first-rounders) and has coached 28 players who have gone on to play professionally, including 19 in the NBA. During his two-year stint in Baton Rouge, Patrick was involved in on-floor coaching, scouting opponents, and recruiting. The final transfer class he helped put together ranked No. 16, and the overall class was in the Top-25 nationally, according to 247 Sports. It was Patrick’s second stint with LSU, originally serving on the Tigers’ coaching staff under Johnny Jones from 2012-15.

Prior to his return to Baton Rouge, Patrick spent two seasons as the head coach at Sacramento State. The Hornets led the Big Sky Conference in rebound margins each of his two seasons as head coach and finished among the top 25 teams in the nation both years. Patrick’s 2022-23 team posted the most wins in school history by a first-year coach. In 2023-24, Sacramento State advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. It was the first time the team had won two games at the postseason event since joining the league in 1996. Since 2019, Patrick has been an assistant coach for the Australian National Team. In 2021, he was part of the staff that helped the Boomers win a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, the country’s first men’s basketball Olympic medal. In the 2024 Paris Games, Australia advanced past group play and into the knockout stage before falling in the quarterfinals.

Patrick and Bennett have previously worked together. Patrick was the associate head coach at Saint Mary’s for four years (2006-10). In his final year in Moraga, the team reached the 2010 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, winning a school-record 28 games and the West Coast Conference tournament title. The Gaels also advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament and the quarterfinals of the 2009 NIT.

After leaving Saint Mary’s, he spent two seasons as a player personnel scout for the Houston Rockets before accepting a job on the staff at LSU. Patrick cemented his reputation as a top-flight recruiter with the Tigers, helping bring LSU a Top-5 recruiting class in 2013 and 2015. After leaving LSU, he spent two seasons at TCU, including a 2017 NIT title run and an NCAA appearance, the first for the school in 20 years. For two years, he was the head coach at UC Riverside (2018-20). In 2020, he was a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award, given to the top mid-major coach in the country. His 2020 team won 17 games, tying a school record for the most Division I wins. That team finished eighth nationally in scoring defense at 60.6 points per game. He also served one season each as an associate head coach at Arkansas and Oklahoma. The 2021 Arkansas team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 and finished 25-7.

During his playing days, Patrick was one of the first Australians to pave the way and come stateside to play basketball. He moved to Baton Rouge from Melbourne, where he attended Chapel Trafton High School in Louisiana. That is where he got on the radar of collegiate coaches after he earned district MVP and First Team All-Parish honors, while also being selected to play in the Louisiana State High School All-Star Game.

One of those coaches whose attention he caught was legendary Syracuse Head Coach and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim. Boeheim recruited and signed Patrick during one of Syracuse's most successful eras.

As a freshman serving as a reserve guard, Patrick and the Orange reached the 1996 NCAA Championship Game, only the second time the program had made it that far. Patrick finished out his collegiate career at Southwest Louisiana (now Louisiana Ragin Cajuns) before beginning his professional career in the NBL (National Basketball League in Australia/New Zealand) with a few stops throughout Europe. After he was done playing the game, he immediately went into coaching and has continued to work his way up in the industry.

The Patrick family includes David’s wife, Cassie, and their two children, Bailee and Madison.

Sun Devil Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Sun Devil Athletics Director Graham Rossini announced that Randy Bennett will be the new Head Coach of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program.

Bennett joins Arizona State following an extremely successful tenure at Saint Mary’s. He spent the past 25 seasons at the helm of one of the nation’s most consistent programs. Bennett built the Gaels into a force in the West Coast Conference, collecting a school-record 589 wins and earning seven WCC Coach of the Year honors. Saint Mary’s made 19 postseason appearances under Bennett, 12 in the NCAA Tournament and seven in the NIT. The Gaels’ streak of 18-straight postseason appearances trails only Gonzaga, Michigan State, and Kansas nationally.

“Coach Bennett is one of the most accomplished and respected coaches in college basketball. We were drawn to his sustained success over multiple decades, his strong recruiting relationships across the country, particularly on the West Coast, and his proven ability to identify and develop international talent. Just as important, he brings a genuine enthusiasm for leading the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program. He has deep ties to the Valley, and we are thrilled to welcome Coach, his wife Darlene, and their family to ASU," said Sun Devil Athletics Director Graham Rossini.

The past five seasons have arguably been Bennett’s best, as he has shown the ability to adapt to college basketball’s ever-changing landscape. He has compiled a 135-36 (.790) record and made the NCAA Tournament in each of those five campaigns. Saint Mary’s has also earned at least a share of four-straight WCC regular season titles, going a combined 62-6 (.912) in conference play during that span.

“It was going to take a special situation for us to leave Saint Mary’s, and I am energized, driven, and focused on taking over Sun Devil Basketball, a program I am very familiar with and grew up watching. We are in the best basketball conference in the nation and I look forward to the opportunity and am excited to meet everyone who wants to help this program reach our goals in the new landscape. My staff and I will be ready for the challenge."

Rick Croy is joining the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program after spending the past 13 seasons as the head coach of Cal Baptist University. He helped the Lancers transition from a Division II powerhouse to a Division I NCAA Tournament participant this season. In the first two seasons of Division I play, the Lancers combined to win 37 games - a NCAA record for most wins in the first two years of a transition program. During his tenure in Riverside, he compiled a 275-137 (.667) record and established himself as one of the top developers of talent in all of college basketball. Guards Dominique Daniels Jr. (2026) and Milan Acquaah (2020) were named WAC Player of the Year under the guidance of Croy.

The 2025-26 season was the pinnacle of Croy’s tenure at CBU. The Lancers finished the year with 25 wins, the most in the program’s Division I history. They were awarded a No. 13 seed in the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, where they faced Kansas in the First Round. Croy surpassed 400 career wins this past season and led CBU to their first WAC Tournament Championship in program history, beating Utah Valley in the conference championship game to clinch an automatic bid to March Madness. Croy led the Lancers to a 15-0 home record and a 19-game win streak at home, the eighth-longest active streak in Division I.

Prior to CBU, Croy spent three years as the lead assistant coach at St. Mary’s. During his time working under Randy Bennett, the Gaels went 80-22 overall, winning two regular-season West Coast Conference championships and making two NCAA Tournament appearances. The duo has been reunited in Tempe for the first time since 2013.

Joe Rahon is joining the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program as an Associate Head Coach after spending the past five seasons under Bennett as an assistant and associate head coach at Saint Mary’s. No one will be more familiar with Bennett’s style and culture than Rahon, as he not only has been on Bennett’s staff, but he also played for Bennett at Saint Mary’s. After spending his first season on staff as a Graduate Assistant, Rahon was promoted to assistant coach, a role he served in for three years. Prior to the 2025-26 campaign, Rahon was promoted to Associate Head Coach for the Gaels. During his lone season as Associate Head Coach, Saint Mary’s continued their historic run, finishing the season 27-6 and splitting the regular season conference championship. The Gaels earned a No. 7 seed in the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, their 18th consecutive postseason appearance.

In his five seasons on Coach Randy Bennett's staff, Rahon has helped the Gaels to five consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Several Gaels showed huge improvements under Rahon's tutelage, including 2025-26 All-WCC performers Paulius Murauskas, Mikey Lewis, and Joshua Dent. Two-time WCC Player of the Year (‘25, ‘24) guard Augustas Marciulionis thrived with Rahon on staff. Lewis won 2025 WCC Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman. Guards Aidan Mahaney, Alex Ducas, and Luke Barrett all received All-Conference distinction as the Gaels turned out some of the nation’s best guards. The list of guards receiving accolades with Rahon on staff continues with Tommy Kuhse and Logan Johnson, who each earned First Team All-Conference honors in 2023.

As a player, Rahon spent two seasons in Moraga playing for Bennett after transferring from Boston College following his sophomore season. He was immediately slotted into the starting lineup as a junior, and the rest is history. Rahon was named First Team All-WCC twice - including as a senior - when he took home WCC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Rahon became just the fourth Gael to win the award, and the first since Omar Samhan in 2010. He was also the conference's Newcomer of the Year in 2016, winning the award for the Gaels for the first time since Patty Mills did so in 2008. Despite playing just two seasons at Saint Mary's, Rahon has his name all over the SMC record book, including a ninth-place ranking in career assists. He also posted the fourth-best career assists-per-game average (5.52), and his 1,293 minutes played during his junior campaign are the second most in Saint Mary's history.
