The Sun Devil men's basketball team played about as well as someone can in the first half at No. 6 Iowa State Saturday, but the Cycloes did what they do on their home court to many in a 86-65 Iowa State win on Senior Day.
ASU used a 15-2 run -- that included 10 straight points -- to take a 41-37 lead at the half, as ASU shot 14-of-24 (.583) from the field, 5-of-12 (.417) from three and was 8-of-11 from the foul line. Pig Johnson had 10 points off the bench in the first half in 14 minutes, as the first 20 minutes had eight lead changes and seven ties.
Iowa State turned it up in its 49-point second half and held ASU to just 6-of-19 from the field as once it took the lead it never gave it back.
Massamba Diop had 12 points, including 8-of-9 from the free throw line, to lead ASU (16-15; 7-11) and added a pair of blocks. Moe Odum added 10 points for ASU, who had 23 turnovers which led to 29 Cyclone points.
Iowa State had a 24-0 run, the biggest in coach TJ Otzelberger's five years and the Cyclones' 39th double-digit run this season, most in the nation.
ASU will play at 11:30 a.m. CT/10:30 a.m. MT on Tuesday in the Big 12 Tournament against either Colorado or Baylor.
Great note on Moe
Odum moved up the season assist list in the program record book. With seven assists, his 183 assists are the fifth-most in program history, the best passing season since Ahlon Lewis set the program record and led the NCAA with 294 assists in 1998.
