TEMPE – No. 12 Sun Devil Women’s Tennis handed Houston (11-1, 2-1 Big 12) its first loss of the season with a 4-0 victory Friday night at Whiteman Tennis Center. Arizona State played the first of five home matches in the month of March, winning its 10th match of the season.
ASU (10-3, 2-1 Big 12) improved to 7-0 this season when winning the doubles point and moved to 3-0 all-time against Houston. The Sun Devils started the evening by clinching the doubles point with senior Vivian Ovrootsky and junior Sara Svetac winning 6-2.
The second win in doubles came from sophomore’s Aiya Nupbay and Lily Taylor, winning 6-4 to help clinch the doubles point. In singles, junior Emilija Tverijonaite won her singles match, 6-3, 6-0, to improve to 7-2 on the season to give the ASU their second point.
Ovrootsky won her 10th-straight dual, 6-1, 6-2, in straight sets, securing the third point for the Sun Devils to improve to 10-0 this spring. The San Jose, Calif. native has won 20 out of 21 sets in dual matches.
Lastly, sophomore Aiya Nupbay got her first win of the spring with a 6-4, 6-1, straight-sets win to clinch the match for the Sun Devils. Svetac was leading on court two 6-3, 6-5 when the match was called.
The Sun Devils will return to action on Sunday, March 8, facing No. 25 UCF at 12 p.m. MST from Whiteman Tennis Center.
