MESA, Ariz.Sun Devil Track and Field divided and conquered at the split meet event this weekend between the Carvel Jackson Memorial Track and Field Showcase and the USC Trojan Invitational, earning a combined 23 podium finishes between March 27-28. 

Redshirt senior Dayton Carlson made headlines for his first-place, 1:45.57, 800-meter run finish. His time marks the fastest pace set by any NCAA Division I athlete this season and is a new program record. Carlson outperformed his previous best time of 1:46.72 and further cemented his name in Arizona State’s record books.

On the other hand, the women’s 800-meter run team featured two podium finishes from juniors Mia Chavez and Sophie Mann, who took first and third, respectively. Chavez finished just .16 seconds away from tying her personal best.

The Trojan Invitational favored the Sun Devil field squad, who tallied four first-place finishes across the eight events in which they competed. 

Freshman Malith Yasiru placed atop the leaderboards for triple jump, setting a personal best distance of 16.50m. Senior Jaden Patterson followed suit, capturing a second-place finish in the event at Carvel Jackson Memorial. 

Junior Alexandria Johnson claimed first in the long jump event. Meanwhile, Grace Cunningham and Claudina Diaz both landed a 1.79m high jump that led the event. Senior Preston Berry and graduate student Ines Lopez rounded out the first-place field finishes when they took first in men’s shot put and women’s discus throw, respectively. 

ASU will have a two-week break before heading south of the Valley to take on Arizona in the ASU vs. UofA Dual Challenge on April 11.
