STANFORD, Calif. – First-half turnovers were the difference in Sun Devil Lacrosse's (5-6) 14-8 loss to No. 2 Stanford (10-0) on Saturday at Maloney Field, as ASU conceded the ball 11 times in the first 30 minutes of the game.
The senior attacking duo of Lydia Oldknow and Teagan Ng led the offensive charge, accounting for six of the team's eight goals. Oldknow had a game-high four points after three goals and one assist.
How it happened
Oldknow opened the game's scoring with a goal seven minutes into the contest. Stanford answered with two of their own before Kendal Morris' manup-up goal tied the contest at two. The Sun Devils turned the ball over five times in the frame, but managed to keep the score knotted at 2-2 to end the first quarter.
The Sun Devils took a 3-2 lead in the second, but the Cardinal tacked on the next six goals of the game to lead 8-3 at halftime. The turnover tally for ASU was up to 11 through 30 minutes of play.
Stanford beat the buzzer on their first possession of the third quarter to push their lead to six goals. Addy Westerberg stopped the bleeding with a goal for ASU to cut the lead to 9-4. Two more goals went ASU's way to make it a 9-6 game before Stanford could score to get into double digits with their 10th, 11th, and 12th goals of the game. The home team led 12-6 to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw just two goals from each team, and the deficit was too much for ASU to overcome. Stanford was able to secure the 14-8 win.
