WACO, Texas. – No. 6 Sun Devil Women's Tennis won its first Big 12 conference match of the season, 4-3, over Baylor Sunday afternoon at Herd Tennis Center. The team won three singles matches in three sets to help clinch the victory over the Bears.
Arizona State (9-3, 1-1 Big 12) ties the all-time series against Baylor (5-4, 1-1 Big 12) to two wins apiece and get their first victory over the Bears since March 4, 2023.
Sophomore Lily Taylor clinched the match for the Sun Devils by winning the final set 6-4. She took the opening set 7-5 before dropping the second set 4-6. Taylor, won her fifth singles match of the season and her third three-set match this year.
Graduate Vivian Ovrootsky won her ninth straight dual match, moving to 9-0 this spring to give ASU its first point. Ovrootsky has won 18 straight sets after today’s win and won her fifth tiebreaker of the year.
Baylor would take a 2-1 lead with a win on court No. 5, but freshman Sarang Lim tied the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, three-set win to give the Sun Devils their second point.
Following a win on court No. 1 for Baylor took a 3-2 lead. Junior Sara Svetac won the last two games to win her match, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 for her second three-set win of the year to tie the match at 3-3. Additionally, it’s her first-ranked win of the season and moves her to 5-2 this spring.
The No. 2 pair of sophomores Aiya Nupbay and Taylor won their doubles match easily, 6-1. But ASU couldn’t win the doubles point as Baylor won on courts one and three.
