IRVING, Texas – After helping Sun Devil Beach Volleyball get two ranked wins in a 4-0 start, junior Olivia McElroy and senior Kendall Whitmarsh are the first Big 12 Pair of the Week of the season.
This is the fourth Big 12 Pair of the Week nod for Arizona State overall after winning three last year. It is the eighth weekly award overall in program history. For Whitmarsh, this is her second pair of the week nod in her career. It is McElroy’s first.
McElroy and Whitmarsh, who played at the No. 5 spot this weekend, clinched the ranked wins for No. 11 Arizona State over No. 5 TCU and No. 13 Grand Canyon. They went undefeated as a pair and helped ASU go undefeated as a team. The Sun Devils had three sweeps among those four wins.
Against defending national and Big 12 champions TCU, McElroy and Whitmarsh battled in a three-set match with the dual at 2-1 in ASU’s favor. They won the third set 15-10 to clinch the dual. The win over No. 5 TCU is the second top-five win in program history. In the cross-town rivalry against No. 13 GCU, they swept their court to clinch the dual as well. Their wins over UC Davis and Colorado Mesa were also in straight sets.
Arizona State is playing two duals at the Cactus Classic this Friday, Feb. 27, down in Tucson. ASU will face Georgia State before taking on in-state rival Arizona.
