The Arizona State Sun Devil Football team (8-4; 6-3 in the Big 12) will try for 20 wins in the past two seasons when it travels to the Sun Bowl to take on ACC champion Duke (8-5; 6-2 in the ACC) for a noon MT kick on CBS on Dec. 31.
Arizona State, the only team to defeat Big 12 champion Texas Tech and the 2024 Big 12 champion, will return to El Paso for the eighth time as it is 4-2-1 in the bowl, the most recent visit a 20-14 win over Florida State on Dec. 31, 2019. ASU’s last trip to El Paso in 2019 resulted in a 20-14 win over Florida State, while the Sun Devils also have wins over Duke (2014), Purdue (2004) and Iowa (1997).
MOST SUN DEVIL WINS OVER TWO SEASONS (1974-PRESENT/52 SEASONS)
After going 3-9 in back-to-back seasons (2022 and 2023), ASU has gone 19-7 in the past two seasons. That is the most Sun Devil wins in back-to-back seasons since ASU went 20-7 under Todd Graham in 2013-14. Prior to that the most wins over two seasons in recent history was 17 (7-6 under Dirk Koetter in 2006 and Dennis Erickson 10-3 in 2007). ASU went 20-4 under Bruce Synder in 1996 (11-1) and 1997 (9-3). The 19 wins has only happened four times in the past 52 seasons.
