AUSTIN, Texas – Twenty current Sun Devils, including Sun Devil alums Leon Marchand and Patrick Sammon, competed this week at the 2025 Toyota U.S. Open Swimming Championships in Austin, Texas. 

Saturday, Dec. 6 recap
Opening the final day of competition, junior Ilya Kharun won gold in the 50 fly, recording a time of 22.98. He would later finish second in the 200 fly in 1:55.71 to France’s Leon Marchand, who won his second gold of the week, with a championship record of 1:52.57.

Junior Miriam Sheehan placed seventh in the A final of the 50 fly (26.91), sophomore Julia Ullmann and senior Gerda Szilagyi competed in the B final, finishing third (26.99) and seventh (27.26), respectively. Junior JT Ewing was fifth in the A final of the 200 back in 1:59.57. 

Sophomore breaststroker Lucie Vasquez was in the B final, and sophomore freestyler Quin Seider won the C final in 48.99. Senior Deniz Ertan was in the A final in the 200 fly, touching the wall in seventh in 2:14.10. 

Friday, Dec. 5 recap
Kharun posted a runner-up finish in the 100 fly (50.40), and Marchand was third at 51.20 for both to land on the podium. Ullmann and Szilagyi competed in the B final, placing first (59.69) and fifth (1:00.08), respectively. In the 400 IM, senior Sonia Vaishnani was second (4:48.12) in the B final. 

In the 200 free, alum Patrick Sammon was third (1:46.59) in the A final to land on the podium. Kulow touched the wall in 1:48.97 to place fifth in the B final to cap the night.

Thursday, Dec. 4 recap:
Four-time Olympic gold medalist Marchand won the 400 free on Thursday with a personal best in 3:44.70. 

In the A final of the 50 free, Kulow placed fourth (21.87), followed by sophomore Tolu Young hitting the wall in seventh (22.06) and senior Remi Fabiani placing eighth (22.09). Kharun was tied for fifth (22.26) in the B final, and Sun Devil alum Patrick Sammon was tied for third in 22.17. Sophomore Quin Seider was second in the C final in 22.75. 

Competing in the B final in the 50 breast, sophomore Lucie Vasquez was sixth (32.21). In the 200 breast, Vaishnani was seventh (2:17.40) in the B final and senior Zoe Summar was in the C final, placing fifth (2:20.79). Sheehan competed in the 50 back B final, placing eighth in 29.44.
