Ilya Kharun collects Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week honor
The Canadian broke three pool records over the weekend
IRVING, Texas – Junior Ilya Kharun earned his eighth Big 12 weekly award of his career after setting three pool records over the weekend in the dual meet win over No. 15 USC, as announced by the Big 12 Conference Thursday morning.
Kharun swam the fastest times of the collegiate season in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly, setting pool records at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center and taking home three event wins over the weekend. He comes off a successful World Aquatics World Cup trip where he secured three gold medals in the 200 fly, securing a crown for sweeping the event.
The Canadian swam the fastest 50 free of any collegiate swimmer this season, hitting the wall in 18.54. Kharun followed up his performance with a 41.23, 100 free swim, which currently ranks second in the country. The butterfly specialist won the 100 fly by more than three seconds, touching the wall in 43.55, which is the fastest in the country and one of two swimmers (Josh Liendo, Florida) to have a sub-43-second 100 fly swim.
The Sun Devils will return to action next Friday, Nov. 21, taking part in the CSCAA Power 4 Dual Meet, facing Tennessee, Michigan, and Virginia, which is a bracket-style meet over three days.
