AMES, Iowa – The winning streaks for No. 6 Sun Devil Volleyball came to an end as Arizona State fell at Iowa State in five sets (17-25, 25-17, 29-27, 22-25, 15-12) at Hilton Coliseum on Friday night.
Notable stats
- Arizona State (18-3, 9-1 Big 12) fell to Iowa State (18-4, 8-3 Big 12), who is in third place in the Big 12 and receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll. ASU’s last loss to an unranked team was back on Nov. 5, 2023 at USC.
- The winning streak for Arizona State ended at 12 in a row. The conference winning streak ended at 25 in a row. ASU is 26-2 in the Big 12 since its first season last year.
- This was Arizona State’s 12th match with double-digit blocks this season, earning 15, the second-most in a match this season. The Sun Devils have had double-digit blocks in seven of the 10 Big 12 matches.
- Head coach JJ Van Niel is 6-3 in five-set matches, 3-1 this season
- Junior opposite Noemie Glover led all players in kills with 18, her 10th match in a row reaching double figures, 15th time this season. She added seven blocks and also tied her career high in digs with six.
- Another Sun Devil in double figures in kills was senior outside Bailey Miller with 14 and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. This was her sixth-straight match with double-digit kills.
- Senior setter Sydney Henry also notched a double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs, her fourth double-double this year. It also was a season high in digs for her.
- Leading all players in digs was sophomore libero Faith Frame with 20, her third match this season reaching that number, ninth of her career. It was her fourth-straight match earning double-digit digs, 12th time this season.
- With a match-high nine blocks, graduate middle blocker Colby Neal has had nine blocks in back-to-back matches. This was her 14th match with five or more blocks this season. She also had seven kills on a .538 clip.
- Senior outside Tatum Parrott had seven digs, six kills, three aces and three blocks for a well-rounded outing.
Set one: ASU 25, Iowa State 17
After Iowa State took an early 4-2 lead, Arizona State responded with five points in a row, leading 7-4 behind the serve of Brynn Covell. A run of three for the Sun Devils was aided by two blocks to push the lead to 12-7. The Cyclones scored three in a row, cutting it to 15-12, until a kill from Ella Lomigora ended the run. It was back and forth for a while until back-to-back kills from Glover put ASU in the red zone at 21-16. With Ella Lewis at the service line, the Sun Devils scored four in a row to win the set, 25-17.
Set two: Iowa State 25, ASU 17
The Cyclones responded with a 4-1 lead in the second set. The Sun Devils chipped away at the deficit, going on a 4-1 run with aces from Covell and Parrott to tie it at 8-8. Iowa State put together a 4-1 run of its own to take the 13-10 lead. Following an ASU timeout. Glover’s kill got the sideout to make it a two-point game, 13-11. Arizona State called its second timeout after allowing Iowa State to score three-straight points, going up 17-13. Four in a row for the Cyclones made it 21-14 and kept the lead, winning 25-17.
Set three: Iowa State 29, Arizona State 27
Arizona State took control early in the third set, leading 5-2 after a block from Colby Neal and Glover. A run of three with kills from three different players gave ASU the 11-6 lead. Iowa State responded with six points in a row, getting ahead 12-11. The Sun Devils inched back ahead, but it was back and forth until the end, neither team scoring more than two in a row. Another ace from Lewis put ASU up 21-19, bringing an Iowa State timeout. After trading more points, Glover’s kill put the Sun Devils at set point, 24-23, forcing the Cyclones to call their second timeout. Iowa State forced extra points after scoring a pair in a row to get to a set point of its own. Glover fought off two Cyclone set points with kills, then Parrott served up an ace to a Sun Devil set point at 27-26. Iowa State scored three in a row to steal the set, 29-27.
Set four: ASU 25, Iowa State 22
It was a back-and-forth start to the set. Iowa State scored three in a row to take the 8-6 lead. The Cyclones added to their lead with another run of three, pushing their lead to 12-8 and bringing a Sun Devil timeout. Miller caught fire and powered her team to five points in a row and the 15-15 tie, earning three kills in the run. A run of four for ASU pushed its lead to 20-17, seeing a kill, block and ace in that run. A block from Colby Neal and Glover added to the lead, 22-18. Parrott’s kill put the Sun Devils at set point, and the Cyclones fought off one before Lomigora’s kill won it 25-22 and forced a fifth set.
Set five: Iowa State 15, ASU 12
Iowa State took the early 3-1 lead, but Arizona State kept it close. After letting the Cyclones get up by three, two in a row with an ace from Parrott put the Sun Devils back within one, down 7-6. Trailing by three again, a powerful shot from Miller got the sideout, with ASU scoring another on an ISU error to make it 9-8. Following two in a row from the Cyclones, the Sun Devils called a timeout while down 11-8. ASU’s final timeout was called down 13-9. With Iowa State at match point, Arizona State scored three in a row with back-to-back blocks to make it 14-12 and bring an ISU timeout. The comeback came up short, however, falling 15-12.
