TUCSON, Ariz. – The Sun Devil women’s soccer program was unable to find the back of the net against Arizona goalkeeper Olivia Ramey as the two programs played to a 90-miinute, 0-0 tie to close out both team’s regular season slate.
After being credited with just one shot attempt – by Tatum Thomason just 95 minutes into the match – the entire first half, the Arizona State offense turned up the pressure during the second 45-minute segment as the Sun Devils posted six shot attempts throughout the second half. Four of which came over the course of the match’s final eight minutes as Peyton Marcisz, Adrielle Mibe and Thomason all had attempts
But despite the seven total shot attempts on the evening, Ramey only had to make two saves on the night, while Arizona State goalkeeper Pauline Nelles was credited with five on 13 Wildcat shots.
The closest either team came to putting the soccer ball passed the opposing goalkeeper came during the 74th minute, when Arizona’s Leilani Cortez-Ramirez appeared to score the first goal of the season by kicking a loose ball inside the 6-yard box. Nelles caught the shot attempt, but the match referee initially thought she caught the ball beyond the goal line. However, after a brief discussion, it was determined she kept the ball out of the net.
FROM HEAD COACH GRAHAM WINKWORTH
“I’m really proud of the team’s second-half efforts: we caused a lot of problems with the press; we had enough chances in the second half to win the match. Unfortunately, it’s been the same thing all season long. We’ve had a lot of chances to win matches, but just not able to capitalize on those chances. But unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be tonight. I’m proud of the girls for their second-half efforts.”
