Three earn double-digit kills in win at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – A strong afternoon on offense pushed No. 7 Sun Devil Volleyball to a win over Utah in four sets (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) on Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, making it 10 wins in a row for Arizona State.

Notable stats

  • Arizona State (16-2, 7-0 Big 12) extended the winning streak to 10 in a row after beating Utah (9-9, 1-6 Big 12). The winning streak is the sixth longest in team history. The team also extended their conference winning streak to 23 in a row, the fourth-longest in the country. 
  • This was Arizona State’s 10th match with double-digit blocks this season, earning 10 in the win. The Sun Devils have had double-digit blocks in five of the seven Big 12 matches so far.
  • Leading the team in kills was junior opposite hitter Noemie Glover with 17 on a .484 clip. This is her seventh match in a row with double-digit kills (12th of the season). She also tied the match-high in blocks with six. 
  • Senior outside hitter Bailey Miller eclipsed 1,000 career kills today as she notched 16 kills. It was her 11th match with double-digit digs this season. She also had nine digs and two aces.  
  • Both setters surpassed 20 assists for the second match in a row, guiding the offense to a .344 hitting percentage, the second best of the season. Senior Sydney Henry led the effort with 27 assists. Redshirt sophomore Brynn Covell had 20 assists and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season (and her career).
  • Sophomore libero Faith Frame led all players in digs with 12, her ninth match this season with double-digit digs, 30th of her career. 
  • Senior outside hitter Tatum Parrott collected 10 kills, her sixth match in double figures this season. 
  • The Neal sisters contributed to the win in kills and blocks. Graduate middle blocker Colby Neal matched the match-high in blocks with six, adding five kills. Junior pin hitter Jillian Neal had six kills and three blocks, the latter tying her personal best.

Set one: ASU 25, Utah 23
Utah led 6-4 early after a 4-1 run. Arizona State scored four in a row with three errors from Utah to take the 10-8 lead. A run of three for the Sun Devils with kills from Glover and Parrott added to the advantage, 15-12, heading into the media timeout. The Utes battled back with five unanswered points to go up 19-16, forcing a timeout from the visiting team. Kills from Miller got ASU back in it, then a block from Colby Neal and Glover followed by a kill from Glover tied it at 21-21, bringing a Utah timeout. After falling down by two, Arizona State scored three in a row with two kills from Glover to get to set point, 24-23. Lomigora and Glover teamed up for a block after a scrappy rally to win the set, 25-23, ending on a 4-0 run.

 

Set two: ASU 25, Utah 22
The second set stayed tight, similar to the first. After four early ties, a fifth tie happened at 8-8 after a kill from Jillian Neal. The Sun Devils scored three in a row with an ace from Miller during the run to take the 12-11 lead. Another kill from Miller and a Utah error put ASU up 15-14 at the media timeout. Following a 3-1 run from the Utes, the Sun Devils scored three-straight points again to regain the lead, 19-17. It was back and forth until the end of the set when Parrott’s well-placed tip got the win, 25-22.

Set three: Utah 25, ASU 20
The Utes jumped ahead early in the third frame, leading 6-3 after a 5-0 run. They then scored three in a row later to make it a 10-6 lead, forcing a Sun Devil timeout. Kills from Miller and Parrott chipped at the lead to get within two, down 11-9, but Utah earned three in a row to push its lead back up to 14-9 and bring a second ASU timeout. Arizona State went on a 4-1 run with three kills from Miller to get back within two, 15-13, but Utah pulled away again with a 4-0 run to make it 20-14. Miller added three more late kills, but the damage had been done, the Utes winning 25-20.

Set four: ASU 25, Utah 20
The teams kept it close again in set four. Glover had three early kills to break ties. Back-to-back kills from Jillian Neal made it 9-8 in favor of ASU. Three more ties happened until a kill from Colby Neal and a Utah error gave Arizona State the 14-12 lead. Following an ace from Covell, the Utes went on a 3-1 run to make it a one-point game, 17-16. After an ASU timeout, the team scored three in a row, capped off by an ace from Henry, to go up 22-19. A solo block by Glover clinched the win, 25-20.
