Cross Country puts lid on Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sun Devil Cross Country has wrapped up its regular season slate after a Saturday morning outing at the Highlander Invitational. The women’s side for Arizona State took home 7th place, where the men placed 13th. Dennis Rono and Mia Chavez once again took the headlines for each respective side after another pair of strong performances.

Chavez led the way for the women, finishing the 6k in 21:23.4 to place 35th. Right behind her was Kayla Case, clocking in at 21:29.5 to place 40th. The duo was then followed by Sophie Mann, who came in at 21:29.6 to place 41st. 

The Sun Devil men were headlined by another stellar outing from Rono. The sophomore placed 12th in the 8k, completing the race in 23:58.4 - a new season best. Boston Walseth continued to impress in his freshman campaign by clocking in at 24:31.4 to take 46th in a competitive field. 

Notably, every member of the women’s team set a new season-best with their times in the 6k. Chavez (21:23.4), Case (21:29.5) and Mann (21:29.6) each shaved off two minutes from their previous outings on Saturday. 

Rono (23:58.4) and Walseth (24:31.4) also clocked new season bests to find their way at the top of the leaderboards for the men’s runners.

Up next
ASU will find its way to Lawrence, Kansas, to compete in the Big 12 Championships on Friday, Oct. 31. The championships will be held at Rim Rock Farm. The event will begin with the men’s 8k at 10 a.m. CT (8 a.m. MST) and will be followed by the women’s 6k at 11 A.M. CT (9 a.m. MST).

At the helm

Following a standout career as a Sun Devil from 2017 to 2022, Meyer now embarks on his journey in guiding the Sun Devil Cross Country squad. He brings excitement to lead the program into a new era, with a vision of building success for years to come.
