TEMPE – Lieske Carleer, a Sun Devil for Life who appeared in 81 career matches throughout her five seasons with the Arizona State Women’s Soccer program, has been selected as a member of the Netherlands National Team for friendly matches against Poland and Canada. This marks Carleer’s first career promotion to the nation’s top team.
Before arriving in Tempe, Ariz., as a freshman in 2019, Carleer served as captain of the Dutch U-17 squad, before earning a starting spot with the U-19 team. This opportunity came while Carleer played in the FC Twente Women’s youth academy, before moving to the United States.
After exhausting her college eligibility following the 2023 season, Carleer signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with FC Twente (Enschede, Netherlands) in the Vrouwen Eredivisie, the top league in the Netherlands. She recently signed a contract extension with the club on March 25, 2025.
Carleer, a 5-foot-9 defender, started 78 of 81 career matches as a Sun Devil and spent 6,371 minutes, 40 seconds on the pitch wearing the Maroon and Gold. Despite spending most of each collegiate soccer match on the defensive back line, Carleer did net two career goals: at UAB (Aug. 29, 2021) and against Colorado College (Sept. 15, 2023). She was also credited with four career assists, with three coming in 17 matches as a true freshman.
Carleer’s 81 career matches as a Sun Devil are tied for the fifth most by an Arizona State women’s soccer student-athlete in program history. She was also a two-time (2020, 2023) All-Pac-12 Second Team selection. She remains the last member of the ASU women’s soccer program to be selected as a conference’s defensive player of the week after being chosen as the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 30, 2021. In the classroom, she was a three-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Selection.
