Sweep over K-State wraps up weekend for #8 volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the block reaching double figures for the third match in a row, No. 8 Sun Devil Volleyball swept Kansas State (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon in the Little Apple. 

Notable stats

  • Arizona State (11-2, 2-0 Big 12) got its seventh sweep of the year after beating Kansas State (7-3, 0-2 Big 12). This also is the 18th-straight Big 12 win for ASU.
  • Arizona State earned double figures in blocks for the third match in a row and seventh time this season, notching 11. Four times this season, ASU has had double-digit blocks in a sweep. Graduate middle blocker Colby Neal led the effort for the second time this weekend, earning six. 
  • The Sun Devils held the Wildcats to a .095 hitting percentage, the fifth match in a row ASU has held its opponents to a sub-.200 clip. It also is the third time this season Arizona State kept a team to a hitting percentage below .100. Only three teams have hit above. 200 against Arizona State.
  • Junior opposite Noemie Glover had a match-high 13 kills in the win, her seventh time in double figures this year. She hit .417, her second time hitting over .400 with at least 10 attempts. Additionally, she had five blocks. 
  • Redshirt sophomore setter Brynn Covell led the team in assists with 22 to go with her two aces. Senior setter Sydney Henry added 13 assists and an ace of her own.
  • Hitting .455, junior middle blocker Ella Lomigora had seven kills and four blocks. 
  • Senior outside hitters Tatum Parrott and Bailey Miller had seven and six kills, respectively. Parrott also had a team-best eight digs.

 

Set one: ASU 25, K-State 19
Arizona State scored the first three points, including two kills in a row from Glover. Another 3-0 run pushed the Sun Devils’ lead to 7-3, capped off by a solo block by Parrott. The Wildcats closed the gap to one after a 4-1 run, 8-7, but a run of four that saw kills from three different players for the Sun Devils made it a 12-7 advantage. After another Kansas State rally to get within two, Covell served ASU on a 5-0 run, capped off by an ace, to lead 18-11. The Wildcats scored four in a row, cutting the deficit to 19-16 and forcing a Sun Devil timeout. A pair of kills from Glover added to a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 23-16. The Wildcats got a few more points on the board, but Lomigora and Presley teamed up for a block to win the set, 25-19.

Set two: ASU 25, K-State 20
After a close start to the second frame, the Sun Devils scored four in a row with Henry serving, earning an ace in the process, to go up 8-4. Kansas State tied it up at 10-10 after a 5-1 run until a kill from Presley ended the run and broke the tie. Following some back and forth, a block from Colby Neal and Glover started a 3-0 run to extend the lead to 17-13. K-State put together another 5-1 run to tie the set again at 19-19, but an error from the home team ended the run and a kill from Glover out of the back row made it 21-19. An ace from Covell pushed the score to 23-20, forcing the Wildcats’ second timeout. Back-to-back kills from Glover sealed the win, 25-20, ending on a 4-0 run. 

Set three: ASU 25, K-State 19
Kansas State jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set, adding to it with another 3-0 run to go up 7-2. Arizona State started battling back, chipping away at the lead with short runs. A kill and block from Colby Neal put ASU within one, down 12-11. Then a big 5-0 Sun Devil run put them on top, 17-14, a run that saw three errors from the Wildcats. It was all Arizona State for the rest of the set. A 4-1 run with kills from four different Sun Devils pushed it to 21-16. Glover’s 13th kill clinched the sweep, 25-19.

Arizona State will host No. 23 Utah on October 4 for the Big 12 home opener at 1 p.m. MST. The game will also see the 2024 Big 12 ring ceremony for the team.
