SAN MARCOS, Texas – No. 9 Sun Devil Volleyball won its fourth win in a row after beating Incarnate Word in straight sets (25-11, 25-21, 25-14) on Friday afternoon as part of the Texas State Invitational. 

Senior outside hitters Bailey Miller and Tatum Parrott were both named to the Texas State Invitational All-Tournament Team. They each notched double-doubles in the wins over Texas State and Incarnate Word.

Notable stats

  • Arizona State (6-1) swept Incarnate Word (3-4) for its third sweep of the season. Head coach JJ Van Niel improved to 30-2 in non-conference games.
  • Both senior outside hitters had double-doubles for their second match in a row and double-digit kills for their fourth match in a row. Tatum Parrott had 15 kills on a .389 clip with 12 digs. Bailey Miller notched 15 kills as well, hitting .382 and adding 13 digs. 
  • Right sides Kiylah Presley and Jillian Neal added to the offense with seven and five kills, respectively. Both hit over .400 in the sweep. Neal had a career high of three blocks.
  • Junior Ella Lomigora led the blocking effort with five. As a team, ASU had nine blocks. 
  • Splitting the setting efforts, redshirt sophomore Brynn Covell had 21 assists and senior Sydney Henry had 20.
  • Leading all players, sophomore libero Faith Frame had 14 digs. 
  • Freshman Ceci Vance made her collegiate debut, coming in as a serving specialist in the first set.

 

Set one: ASU 25, Incarnate Word 11
An early ace from Colby Neal made it a 4-2 Sun Devil lead. A massive 9-2 run for ASU pushed the lead up to 15-6, a run that saw five kills from Miller. Arizona State kept growing the lead with three-straight points to extend it to 19-8 after kills from Presley and Parrott, causing Incarnate Word’s second timeout. Ella Lomigora’s first kill of the night pushed the advantage to 22-10. Miller’s seventh kill of the day sealed the win, 25-11. This was the largest margin of victory for Arizona State in a set this season.

Set two: ASU 25, Incarnate Word 21
The Cardinals responded to start the second frame, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. However, the Sun Devils evened it at 5-5 after a kill and then an ace from Jillian Neal. ASU scored three in a row with a kill from Presley and ace from Colby Neal to go up 10-9. There was back and forth play until another run of three for the Sun Devils made it a 14-12 advantage. Following an UIW timeout, the Cardinals went on a 4-1 run to take the 16-15 lead until another Miller kill tied it up again. The teams kept it close towards the end ASU put together a 6-1 run to close out the set, winning 25-21.

Set three: ASU 25, Incarnate Word 14
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the third set. A run of three with kills from three different Sun Devils added to the lead, 8-2. With Parrott serving and earning an ace in the process, ASU scored four in a row, making it 14-5. The Cardinals fought back, going on a 4-1 run, but a kill from Colby Neal stopped the run and added to the 18-11 lead.
