LOS ANGELES – No. T-11 Sun Devil Water Polo (17-8, 1-5 MPSF) fell to No. 1 USC (25-1, 4-0 MPSF) on Saturday afternoon at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
A flurry of fourth quarter goals almost saw a comeback for the Sun Devils as Quin and Almeda led the charge for ASU. Quin put nine points while Almeda put up eight points, their third time each netting an eight plus point game this season. The match up also pushed both players over the 100 point mark for this season, Almeda now boasting 100 career points.
The postseason begins now for the Maroon and Gold as they will travel back to Los Angeles in two weeks for the MPSF conference tournament.
GAME NOTABLES
The first goal scorer of the game, Millie Quin scored 1:04 into the first quarter with an assist from freshman Itziar Almeda. The Trojans went on a short scoring run, adding three to their total, before Quin got the penalty opportunity to cut their lead to one. Molly Glad netted the equalizer with three minutes to go against her former team. USC scored twice while Quin got one more goal off before the eight minutes was up to enter the second, 4-5.
USC went on a four goal scoring run before Quin was able to net one of her own to pause the Trojans attack. Another handful of USC goals and an Itizar Almeda goal rounded out the quarter for the Sun Devils to head into the half down 6-11.
The lone goal in the third quarter for the Sun Devils came from Almeda on the powerplay with Quin on the assist with 1:17 remaining. ASU entered the fourth and final quarter 7-14.
The most action-packed quarter for the Maroon and Gold saw six goals scored by four Sun Devils. Sophie Shorter-Robinson got things started with her first goal of the game 59 seconds into the quarter. Zoe Frangieh followed suit less than a minute and a half later with her first of the game. Quin, Almeda, and Shorter-Robinson all netted one more goal but the Sun Devil comeback attempt was not enough as the Trojans ultimately finished on top 13-18.
