TEMPE – No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo (16-5, 0-1 MPSF) fell 18-12 to No. 1 Stanford (13-0, 0-0) on Saturday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatics Center.

Itziar Almeda, Millie Quin and Sophie-Shorter Robinson were dynamic in today's matchup as they each recorded their own hat-tricks. Their dominant performance wasn't able to clinch the win against the number one ranked team, as the Cardinals were able to pull away with the lead in the second half.

GAME NOTABLES
  • Three Sun Devils recorded hat tricks in today's matchup: Itziar Almeda, Millie Quin, and Sophie Shorter-Robinson. This is Almeda's tenth game netting 3+ goals, Quin's fourteenth, and Short-Robinson's fifth.
  • Millie Quin extends her point scoring streak to 12 games totaling 55 points.
  • In net for the Maroon and Gold was junior Sanne Keijzer, she made nine saves and had six steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The theme of the first quarter was defense as both sides traded stops to open the match. The Sun Devils found the back of the net halfway through the period on a penalty shot scored by Millie Quin tying the score at 1-1. Stanford's suffocating defense and fast-paced offense helped the Cardinals tack on two more before the end of the first, leaving the score at 3-1 heading into the break.

Stanford jumped out to a four-goal lead in the second after two early goals to start the quarter. ASU fought back though with Sophie Shorter-Robinson and Hannah McClaskey scoring two goals of their own to make the score 5-3. The Sun Devils struggled to stay close with the No. 1 team in the country to finish the first half with Stanford notching three more goals to Arizona State's one.

Trailing 8-4 to start the third quarter, Stanford once again came out strong to start the period with another two goals early. The remainder of the period mirrored the defensive first quarter as only Shorter-Robinson scored for ASU before Stanford netted one back, extending the lead to 11-5.

The Sun Devils could not mount a comeback in the fourth quarter as the final period turned into a track meet. With 14 goals scored between the two sides, the final score was 18-12 in favor of Stanford.
