LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 7 Sun Devil Water Polo (9-2, 0-0) returns home from the Triton Invitational with a ninth place finish after their victory over No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (7-3, 0-0) on Sunday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center. 

Millie Quin (4), Itziar Almeda (3), and Karly Frangieh (2) were instrumental in the ranked victory to close out the Triton Invitational. Quin and Almeda opened the scoring in the first half and K. Frangieh helped the two close out the game with her goals in the fourth. 

GAME NOTABLES
  • Arizona State outscores their opponents 170-100 for the season
  • This is the fifth time this season that Junior Millie Quin has tallied 4+ goals scored in a game. She also leads the team in goals scored at 30, tallying 12 goals during the Triton Invitational
  • Freshman Itziar Almeda tallied her fifth hat trick of the season
  • The nine goals scored by the Sun Devils is the lowest amount of goals scored this season to clinch the win over an opponent

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sun Devils were able to net the first goal of the game as Itziar Almeda scored at 6:34. UC Santa Barbara then notched two in a row but couldn't hold onto the lead as Almeda tied it up at 3:45. Millie Quin and the Gauchos each scored an additional two goals, heading into the second period 4-4. The second period was quiet as the only goal scored was by Millie Quin with 1:29 remaining, giving the Sun Devils the 5-4 lead to close the half.

The defense held strong through the third as the Maroon and Gold denied any Gaucho scoring. Millie Quin and Karly Frangieh were each able to net a goal, maintaining the lead 7-4 through the third. Two goals from each team rounded out the fourth. Itziar Almeda completed her hat trick and Karly Frangieh tallied an additional goal to cement the Sun Devil victory, 9-6. 

UP NEXT
After two weeks on the road, Sun Devil Water Polo returns home for their first conference matchup of the season. They host defending National Champions, No. 1 UCLA, February 9 at 1:00 p.m. MST.
