IRVINE, CALIF. – After a nail-biting overtime matchup, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo (16-4, 0-1 MPSF) secured ninth place in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational by defeating No. 14 LMU (8-8, 1-0), 17-15, on Sunday afternoon. 

A 10 point performance by Itziar Almeda capped off the weekend as she was able to tally five goals and five assists in the win over LMU. Almeda scored the game winning goal in today's overtime match as well as yesterday's overtime match with No. 17 Indiana. Hannah McClaskey and Millie Quin each also contributed majorly to the score with four and five goals, respectively.

GAME NOTABLES
  • Millie Quin rounds out the weekend with 22 points (17G, 5A). She tallied five goals and two assists against the Lions, marking her ninth game of the season with 5+ points. She is also on an 11 game point scoring streak that totals 50 points. 
  • Itziar Almeda had 10 points against LMU (5G, 5A). Only two other Sun Devils in program history have tallied a higher point total in a single game. 
  • This was the first time this season that freshman Hannah McClaskey has scored four goals in one game. She is the third highest scoring freshman, having scored 19 goals this season. 
  • The team tied their season high in field blocks by earning five in today's game. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hannah McClaskey netted the first two goals for the Sun Devils, one on the power play and the other at even strength. 
  • Millie Quin scored the next two to give the Sun Devils a two goal lead.
  • One last goal from Itziar Almeda stamped the first quarter closed to bring the Sun Devils up to five goals scored. 
  • The second quarter saw both teams net four goals with Millie Quin, Hannah McClaskey, and Itziar Almeda (2) increasing their totals to enter the half with a 9-6 lead. 
  • LMU was able to sneak one past and open the scoring in the third. Quin responded with one of her own but the Lions retaliated by netting another goal.  
  • The remaining minutes saw three more LMU goals and two Sun Devil goals, one scored by Millie Quin and the other, Hannah McClaskey.
  • Entering the quarter down by one, the Lions were able to find the equalizer early into the fourth. A true back-and-forth battle broke out where Ani Pamp, Sophie Shorter-Robinson, and Kinga Hnatyszyn all were able to tally a goal to keep the Sun Devils in the game. A 15-15 tie forced the game into overtime.
  • Similar to the matchup with Indiana, Itziar Almeda scored two goals in overtime, one in the first three minutes and another in the second. She was the only scorer able to find the back of the net, clinching ninth place for the Maroon and Gold 17-15. 
UP NEXT
A well deserved break lands the Sun Devils back at home on March 8 where they face off against Stanford at 1:00 p.m. MST.
