IRVINE, CALIF. – In a successful day two outing at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo (15-4, 0-1 MPSF) bested Biola (1-9, 0-0) 16-9, and No. 17 Indiana (11-4, 0-0), 14-12, at Corona del Mar High School. The Maroon and Gold look to take home ninth place tomorrow in the final round of the tournament. 

The win against Biola was a true team effort as 12 Sun Devils were able to notch a goal in the matchup. Even with the large number of scorers, a main contributor was sophomore Alison Kokorowski who was able to net three goals, the most in the game for ASU. 

Junior Millie Quin had a standout performance in the matchup against Indiana with six goals and two assists. Itziar Almeda also had a high point earning game as she netted four goals and an assist to help lift the Sun Devils to their overtime victory. 

GAME NOTABLES
  • Millie Quin continues to set new milestones as this weekend she has successfully 150 career goals and 200 career points. 
  • With her three points against Biola, Alison Kokorowski inches closer to 50 career points. She needs only two more to hit the milestone. 
  • Quin set a new career record by earning eight points (6G, 2A) in the matchup with Indiana. This is the first time this season that Quin has netted six goals in a game. 
    • Freshman Karly Frangieh is the only other Sun Devil to net six goals in a game this season (Feb. 16, 2025 vs. Iona). 
  • Quin tied a season high with her five steals against Indiana. 
  • Itziar Almeda had a five point (4G, 1A) game against Indiana as she netted the game winning goal in overtime. 
  • Sophie Shorter-Robinson continues to lead the team in drawn exclusions (23). 
  • Four Sun Devils had a 3+ point game on Saturday
  • Sanne Keijzer, Keri Glad, and Marie Rudasics all made an appearance in net today. The three netminders made a combined 17 saves between the two games. 
Game 1: No. 10 Arizona State 16, Biola 9
Biola was able to score first, but ASU quickly followed with six unanswered goals. Itziar Almeda, Hannah McClaskey, Alison Kokorowski, Layla Smith, Kinga Hnatyszyn, and Ani Pamp each nabbed a goal to bring the score 6-1 at the end of the first. 

Millie Quin opened the scoring in the second quarter with two goals in the first three minutes. The only other ASU scorer in the first half was Molly Glad who successfully scored on the penalty. 

The second half started with each team trading goals back-and-forth. Sophie Shorter-Robinson and Karly Frangieh kicked off the scoring in the third quarter and Alison Kokorowski closed it out by completing the hat trick with two goals.

Putting up a solid defensive front, the Maroon and Gold shut out the Eagles in the final quarter. Kat Featherstone, Zoe Frangieh, and Molly Glad were able to each tally a goal, finalizing the score 16-9 ASU. 

Game 2: No. 10 Arizona State 14, Indiana 12
Itziar Almeda got the ball rolling with a goal 46 seconds into the first quarter. Indiana was able to net three in a row before the Sun Devils struck once more. Itziar Almeda capitalized on the power play and Millie Quin followed her lead and scored with 1:19 remaining in the first. 

The Sun Devils were able to pull ahead in the second as Millie Quin notched two more goals and Sophie Shorter-Robinson netted her first of the game. 

More back-and-forth action broke out in the second half with ASU having three different goal scorers in the third. Millie Quin, Molly Glad, and Hannah McClaskey were all able to contribute to the 9-8 lead as the Maroon and Gold entered the final frame. 

Indiana tied it up with the first goal of the quarter but Quin quickly retaliated with one of her own 20 seconds later. Each team netted two more goals to send the fast-paced game into overtime. 

Bookending the game, Itziar Almeda was the lone scorer in overtime, netting two goals to clinch the overtime win, 14-12.

The Sun Devils battle for ninth place as they take on No. 14 LMU at 2:00 p.m. MST in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
