IRVINE, CALIF. – No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo (13-4, 0-1 MPSF) fell 19-8 as they were unable to hold off the late effort from No. 8 Long Beach State (6-6, 0–0) in the first round of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Friday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Sun Devils started off hot with a slew of goals by Millie Quin, who notched a hat trick before halftime. Even with the Sharks trading shots, the Sun Devils were able to maintain the lead until late in the third when LBSU went on a hot streak of scoring. Sophie Shorter-Robinson tried to mount a late effort but it wasn't enough to clinch the comeback victory.
Keri Glad was a strong presence in goal, tallying 13 saves. She was also able to capture an assist and a steal in the match up.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter started hot and heavy with both sides trading shots back-and-forth. Millie Quin was able to break through first, netting the first goal of the game two minutes into the quarter. The Sharks were able to find the equalizer midway through, but Quin scored on a penalty shot to give the Devils the lead heading into the second quarter.
Early into the second, LBSU was able to capitalize on the power play and score their second goal. The Sun Devils were then able to draw an exclusion of their own and retake the lead as Quin scored on the power play. Karly Frangieh was also able to net one of her own with 5:32 remaining in the first half. Finding the back of the net twice in a row, LBSU was able to bring the score to 4-4. Itziar Almeda notched her first of the game to pull ahead once more. Quin extended the lead with a penalty shot to give the Maroon and Gold a two goal lead into the half.
LBSU came out swinging with two goals unanswered to tie up the score early in the third. Almeda was able to switch the momentum in favor of the Sun Devils as she scored with 5:25 remaining. The Sharks netted two more in a row to take the lead for the first time in the game.
Sophie Shorter-Robinson was the lone goal scorer for the Sun Devils in the fourth. The Sharks were able to outpace the Sun Devils, solidifying the 8-19 final score.
