MANOA, Hawaii – Aloha to Hawaii as No.12 Sun Devil Water Polo (6-1, 0-0) finished the second day of the Rainbow Invitational with an upset win over No. 10 LMU (2-3, 0-0) and a loss to No. 5 Hawaii (4-1, 0-0) at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Saturday.
Junior Zoe Frangieh led the team to victory over No. 10 LMU as she was the only one able to break the dry spell in the second overtime to secure the win. Frangieh was also able to net a goal versus No. 5 Hawaii.
In the second match of the day, the Maroon and Gold were unable to outpace the Wahine even with a hat trick from Almeda and two goals from Alison Kokorowski. The two accounted for five of the seven goals the Sun Devils slotted versus Hawaii.
Game Notables
Game 1: No. 12 ASU 12, No. 10 LMU 11
LMU came out hot and heavy after securing the first two goals of the game early in the first. It wasn't until many minutes later that the Sun Devils were able to put a number on the board. Millie Quin found the back of the net on a penalty shot at 1:27. Each side got another goal before the period ended with ASU's tally from Molly Glad off another penalty shot.
Kat Featherstone won the sprint in the second, aiding in Itziar Almeda's equalizer at 7:23. LMU scored a minute later to take back the lead, but Millie Quin fired another into the net with the set up from Itziar Almeda a minute after that. Finding their first lead of the game, Itziar Almeda punched the goal with the assist from Molly Glad to bring the score to 5-4 to close out the half.
Something to prove, the Lions fired two into the cage to retake the lead in the third. Almeda answered back with her third of the game to move back to a tie game at 5:25. Kinga Hnatyszyn and Millie Quin each scored before the period concluded to enter the fourth with a 8-7 cushion.
An action packed last period, Zoe Frangieh scored initially with the assist from Itziar Almeda. LMU inched closer with a goal at 5:04 but Millie Quin upped the lead by one when she scored on the powerplay at 4:21 with an assist from Itziar Almeda. LMU is able to get in three more while ASU can only net one more versus the goalkeeper, resulting in a 11-11 tie at the end of regulation.
The first overtime period was a defensive battle, with neither team finding the net. In the second overtime, Zoe Frangieh broke through at 1:56, assisted by Ani Pamp, to put the Sun Devils ahead. Goalkeeper Sanne Keijzer stood tall, shutting down LMU's attempts for the remainder of the period and securing the 12-11 upset victory over the No. 10-ranked Lions.
Game 2: No. 12 ASU 7, No. 6 Hawaii 14
The match-up began fast with shots flying on both sides. Itziar Almeda was able to snag the first goal of the game at 6:48 but Hawaii responded with three unanswered goals to move the score 3-1 heading into the second.
Ani Pamp set the tone in the second period by winning the sprint, giving ASU the first possession. Almeda struck again at 4:47, cutting into the deficit, but Hawaii dominated the quarter, netting five goals to extend their lead to 8-2 by halftime.
The Maroon and Gold moved quickly in the start of the second half as Zoe Frangieh found the back of the net with the assist from Ani Pamp just 27 seconds into the period. A stretch of back-and-forth then broke out as the game progressed four minutes with no scoring. Hawaii eventually broke the deadlock with a goal, but ASU quickly answered during a powerplay, as Almeda completed her hat trick. The remaining minutes of the period resulted in two Hawaii goals and another ASU powerplay goal from Alison Kokorowski, bringing the score to 11-5.
Ani Pamp won her third sprint of the game to get things moving in the fourth. Unfortunately, the Wahine were able to capitalize on a turnover and scored first. With three and a half minutes left, Kinga Hnatyszyn scored and brought the score to 6-13. Each team netted one more goal in the period, ultimately finalizing the score 7-14 in favor of Hawaii.
