TEMPE –  Arizona State lacrosse (2-0) completed their successful season-opening weekend by defeating Niagara (1-1) by a score of 17-10 on Sunday morning. The Sun Devils again had a trio of players with hat tricks after Lydia Oldknow, Mina Scott, and Shannon Urey each netted three or more goals apiece.

Sun Devils coach Taryn VanThof praised her team's strong start,"It was great to see us come out strong off the first whistle," VanThof said. "Zoe [Mazur] dominated the draw giving the offense possession to let them do their thing."

When ASU wasn't attacking, they received strong play in net. Junior goalkeeper Katie Vahle stopped four of nine shots through the first 36:30 of the game. With a 10-goal second-half lead, VanThof let her other two netminders see the field. Freshman goalie Sara Flobeck stopped seven of 11 shots and senior goaltender Flynn Murphy tallied one save.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
ASU led Niagara 9-1 after the first quarter thanks to Oldknow's three goals and six other players tallying one score each. The Sun Devils scored four goals in the first 3:10 of the game, followed by five more goals in a six-minute span from 6:37 to 12:31. The Sun Devils finished the first quarter with a 12-5 shot advantage.

The Sun Devils scored four second quarter goals to extend their lead to 13-1 at the half. Junior defender Maddelena Signorile scored her first career goal 10:21 into the period after she forced a turnover at midfield. She was fouled on the way to the net and scored on her free shot. Two of ASU's scores were tallied by Scott to complete her hat trick.

Urey scored her third goal of the game 2:10 into the third quarter to join the hat trick club and extend ASU's lead to 14-3. After Niagara senior attacker Lexi Braniecki scored two straight goals to cut the deficit to nine, Oldknow scored her fourth goal of the game with 2:35 remaining in the quarter to put the Sun Devils ahead 15-5.

Rachele Crane scored with 11:55 remaining in the game to cut Niagara's deficit to nine, but junior midfielder Berit Brookfield pushed ASU's lead back to 10 less than two minutes later. Garlow scored three goals for Niagara in 39 seconds to make it a 16-9 game. It was the Purple Eagles' smallest deficit since ASU scored their seventh goal 10 minutes into the first goal. Freshman attacker Emma Heenan scored to put the Sun Devils ahead by eight with 2:45 remaining.
