Stanford, Calif. - Sun Devil Women's Golf opened the Stanford Intercollegiate with a solid effort on Friday.

Hosted at Stanford Golf Course, the field features eight of the Top-25 teams in the initial Scoreboard rankings. No. 4 Arizona State fired a 286 (+2) in the first round, which has them in fifth place in the 19-team field. Host No. 3 Stanford has the lead at -11, with No. 14 Texas, No. 12 Virginia, and Princeton rounding out the rest of the Top-5. The Maroon and Gold ended their round on a high note, as the team recorded ten birdies over their final six holes.

The Sun Devils were led by junior Beth Coutler, who got off to a great start in the opening round. She carded a 68 (-3) and finds herself tied for second after the first 18 holes thanks to a five-birdie performance. Not far behind is fellow junior Paula Schulz-Hanssen, who shot a 70 (-1) to end in a tie for 15th after day one. She is tied with freshman Isla McDonald-O'Brien (-1/70), as she continues to contribute positively in only her fourth collegiate start. Senior Grace Summerhays looks to build off the three birdies she buried over her final six holes.

Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team is still in contention for the team lead, with Beth Coulter sitting only two strokes back in the individual race. The Sun Devils will play the tournament with only four golfers, as Patience Rhodes withdrew prior to the round due to injury. Despite the circumstances, ASU still delivered a competitive effort on Friday. Three of the four golfers in the lineup finished under par. Arizona State will attempt to make up ground in the second of three rounds starting tomorrow at 8:36 AM MST.

Play for her
The Stanford Intercollegiate is once again supporting PlayForHer as part of an initiative to help raise funds in support of breast cancer research. This year's tournament is being dedicated to Arizona State Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye and her late sister, Heather Farr. Heather was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 23 and lost her battle five years later. Supporters can help raise money by pledging to sponsor each birdie your favorite team makes, or even better, the entire field. In 2023, there were 763 total birdies made, and on average, each team made 40 birdies. The team with the most birdies will receive an award for helping make an impact through the game of golf. Consider supporting and learn more about the cause HERE.

Quotables
"Although it's unfortunate that Patience is not able to play this tournament due to an injury, we hope to have her back next week when we travel to Hawaii," Coach Farr-Kaye remarked. "Under the circumstances, I felt the team did a fantastic job today and certainly played a great backside to hang in there. It's definitely a little bit more difficult when you only have four players playing."

"For us to have ten birdies on the backside is just really fantastic," Coach Farr-Kaye added. "This is a really good golf course really really good test. We did a really good job today and  our goal is is keep doing what we're doing. We didn't change anything today. We have our our process about how we want to compete and we're we're not gonna let anything take us out of that. We did a really good job of doing that today. We're looking forward to two more days to compete here at Stanford. I look forward to watching a lot more putts drop."

The course
The Stanford Golf Course, located in the foothills above the Stanford University campus, is home to the Stanford Men's and Women's Golf teams. The Par 71, 6,278-yard course has hosted several significant events, including the Stanford Invitational, Peg Barnard Intercollegiate, Pac-10/12 Championships, NCAA Western Regional, and the Women's NCAA Championships, USGA Junior Amateur Qualifying, and U.S. Open Qualifying. The tournament is hosted by former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, an avid golfer and Stanford Graduate School of Business faculty member. Four of the five Sun Devils have competed in at least one collegiate event at the Stanford Golf Course at the 2022 or 2023 Stanford Intercollegiate.

History at Stanford Intercollegiate
The Sun Devils will be making their 12th appearance at the Stanford Intercollegiate, first competing at the event in 1980. This is the eighth time in the last nine editions that Arizona State will be a part of the field. ASU has enjoyed its fair share of success at Stanford, winning the team title six times, most recently in 2019. Arizona State (-10/842) earned its ninth title in the Missy Farr-Kaye era, putting together their eighth-lowest score vs. par over 54 holes in school history.

The Sun Devils were also victorious at the 2009, 2007, 2004, 1995, and 1982 Stanford Intercollegiate. A pair of Sun Devil legends earned individual titles at the Stanford Intercollegiate, as Heather Bowie took home the individual crown in 1995 while Brandie Burton was the champion of the 1989 event.

Empty the notebook

  • Arizona State is one of ten teams that made the 2024 NCAA Championship and returns four members from that team.
  • The Sun Devils will face a team in the Top-10 of GOLF Channel's preseason rankings a total of 28 times this year.
  • Missy Farr-Kaye enters her ninth season as the Head Coach of Sun Devil Women's Golf. She is tied with Bobby Hurley (Men's Basketball) and Greg Powers (Hockey) as the second-longest tenured Sun Devil Athletics Head Coach. She trails only Zeke Jones, who is getting ready for his 10th year at the helm of the Sun Devil wrestling program.
  • ASU has the chance to play in the state of Arizona up to four times this year. Regular season events have them playing Superstition Mountain Golf Club (Gold Canyon), Wigwam Golf Club (Litchfield Park), and Papago Golf Club (Phoenix). Should they qualify for a regional, the Sun Devils would compete at Superstition Mountain Golf Club a second time, serving as one of six regional hosts.
