UTICA– On Thursday afternoon, the United States Box Lacrosse Head Coach Ginny Capicchioni named the inaugural U.S. Women's Box National Team that will compete in the 2024 Women's Championship. Arizona State was well represented on the 23-man roster, as Sun Devil Lacrosse student-athlete Helen Park, and assistant coach Caroline Wakefield both earned a spot on defense.
After nearly one year of training camps and tryouts, Wakefield praised the opportunity to represent team USA, "It's an honor to be apart of the inaugural US Women's box team. Growing up you always dream about representing your country in the sport that you love and the opportunity is a dream come true for me."
Park on the other hand, battled back from an ACL tear to make the roster, "It was a long journey to make the team. After tearing my ACL, playing for USA felt very up in the air. However, I was blessed with the best ASU staff, family, friends, and teammates to push me through every obstacle to make this dream come true. Playing at the last USA camp was my first time playing since tearing my ACL, so it felt like I could finally put my injury behind me and only look ahead. I'm very excited to continue this USA journey and go for gold in September!"
The U.S. will be one of 10 nations competing in the women's championship, the first time World Lacrosse has hosted a women's box world championship. The championship is set to take place in Utica, New York September 20-29 at the Utica University Nexus Center. The United States will be competing in Pool A alongside England, Haudenosaunee, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands.
