The 2024 NCAA champion Sun Devil men's swimming and diving team attended The White House NCAA Champions event on Monday, July 22. Celebrating championship squads during the 2023-24 academic year.
For the event, about 50 championship teams across NCAA Division I, II and III were in attendance Monday morning, with many members of the championship team representing the Sun Devils at the event and socializing with other championship teams.
"It was such an incredible experience to be recognized at our nation's capital. Sharing the White House lawn with NCAA Champions of every sport is what college athletics is all about. Our elected officials gave us a firsthand look at what happens behind the scenes in Washington. Special thanks to Congressman Andy Biggs for bringing us into the House of Representatives and giving us a live look at how our government works." said head coach Herbie Behm. "Every member of our team agreed it was an incredible experience. I hope we can win again to get back!"
The morning started with a one-of-a-kind tour of The White House offered to attendees, Sun Devil athletes, coaches and support staff, being able to see several historical rooms located throughout the iconic landmark. Then, all programs were greeted on the south lawn of the White House by a symphony orchestra that played iconic American movie theme songs, including theme songs from The Incredibles, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and many more. Attendees had an opportunity to socialize with other champions on the South Lawn.
"It was obviously an incredible experience for all of us. It's a tremendous honor to be able to attend that event. And it was a perfect conclusion to the celebration of our national championship." said Arizona State alum Jack Dolan.
The ceremony then began at 11:30 a.m. ET with remarks from an NCAA representative followed by Vice President Kamala Harris who filled in for President Joe Biden. Harris praised the "grit and determination" the national champion student-athletes displayed in 2023-24.
The Sun Devil Men's team came off winning their first NCAA title in March and their second consecutive Pac-12 championship, including winning national titles in seven events. Léon Marchand won five more national titles, two on relay squads and three at the 2024 NCAA Championships, including going back-to-back in the 400 IM and the 200 breast. During the regular season, the squad went 9-0-1 during the season in duals, going undefeated.
