TEMPE, Ariz.-- Ilya Kharun will appear in his first Olympic games, as the incoming Sun Devil sophomore sophomore won the 200m butterfly and finished second in the 100m butterfly this past week in competition at the 2024 Canadian Olympic Trials in Toronto.
In the 200m fly final on Friday evening, he clocked in an Olympic qualifying time of 1:54.41. His time ?was within a second of his Canadian record of 1:53.82 last summer, when he tied for fourth place at the 2023 World Aquatic Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Kharun's mark on Friday would have won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
To finish out his time in Toronto on Sunday, Kharun took second in the 100m butterfly with a time of 51.09, a career-best after swimming a time of 51.22 last summer, to qualify for his second event in Paris.
Local pro Taylor Ruck and Stanford graduate will compete in the 50m free and as a part of the 4x100m free relay in her third Olympic games. She was a part of the 4x100m free relay that won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and the relay that won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics will occur from July 26 to August 11.
