STANFORD, Calif. – Sun Devil softball dropped the opener of its three-game series with No. 8 Stanford 4-0 on Friday night at Smith Family Stadium.
Arizona State (18-16, 2-8 Pac-12) had just two infield singles off the nation's leader in WHIP, NiJaree Canady of Stanford (20-6, 9-1). ASU starter Deborah Jones held the Cardinal to just four hits in her second complete game of the season.
Stanford took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind a two-run home run from Ava Gall. The Cardinal added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the final margin.
Sara Kinch singled in the second and was hit by a pitch in the fifth to reach base in both of her plate appearances. Tanya Windle added a single in the seventh inning.
ASU and Stanford will play game two of their final Pac-12 series on Saturday. First pitch will be at 5 p.m., and the game will be live on Pac-12 Networks.
