TEMPE – The recognition continues for Sun Devil Water Polo as senior Luca Petovary was named MPSF Player of the Year, the first time a Sun Devil has taken home the honor in program history, and being named to the Delfina All-MPSF first-team. Along with Millie Quin being named onto Delfina All-MPSF Second Team, her first career honor announced by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Wednesday afternoon.
Petovary picks up her fourth honor this year after being named MPSF Player of the Week three times this season. She is now a three-time All-Conference selection in her career after being named All-MPSF Honorable Mention last year and named to the All-MPSF Newcomer team in 2021.
Quin picks up her first career honor by earning a spot on the All-MPSF Second Team after achieving career highs in all offensive categories this season.
The announcement sparks the 15th straight year the program has had at least two members on an All-MPSF team and Petovary's Player of the Year honor marks the program's second major annual award winner since Vanda Baska earned Newcomer of the Year in 2022.
Heading into the MPSF Conference Tournament, Petra Pardi's team has achieved its second-most wins in program history with 22 wins, doubling their win total from 2023. The Sun Devils also have 11 wins at home, along with 11 ranked wins this year, a team that boasts seven freshmen.
Senior attacker Luca Petovary has led the offensive charge all season long. Boasting an MPSF and program single-season record of 120 goals in 29 games, averaging 4.13 goals a game. In a contest against Mount St. Mary's (March 1) she tallied 10 goals on 10 shots, breaking the MPSF and Sun Devil record for most goals in a game. She has scored in all 29 games this season, securing 23 hat-tricks this year and has 11 games this season alone with five-goals or more. She also ranks eighth in the conference with 28 assists this year for a conference-leading 148 points, and is third in the MPSF with 35 earned exclusions. She was one of three players to earn weekly MPSF honors three times or more this year. Lastly, she led all scorers with 22 goals in six MPSF conference games.
In the ASU record books, she also owns the most points recorded in a season with 148 points, and became the second Sun Devil in program history to have 300 points in a career with 327 points entering this weekend, firmly in second in ASU history.
Assisting the offense all season was sophomore Millie Quin, making the most out of her first season in Tempe with 69 goals and 40 assists, both career highs and being the sixth Sun Devil to surpass 100 points in a season. Her 69 goals rank second in the conference, only behind her counterpart Petovary, and ranks second in assists, only behind Lara Kiss with 42.
She opened up the year with five straight hat-tricks and has compiled 14 hat-tricks this entire season and led the team in steals with 33, which ranks third in the MPSF conference.
For both, it marks the first time in program history two players have recorded 100 points or more in the same season, and both have combined for 189 goals this year, accounting for about 47% of the team's scoring. The Sun Devils will look to continue their season this week at the MPSF Conference Tournament beginning Friday against USC at 12:30 p.m AZT.
