DENVER – Arizona State lacrosse (7-8, 2-3) wrapped up its 2024 non-conference play against No. 13 University of Denver (11-3, 4-0 Big East) in Sunday's matinee, falling 21-11 in the road contest despite facing just a 9-7 deficit at the half. The 11 goals, however, were the second-most goals DU has allowed this season after giving up 14 to No. 1 Northwestern.

Though a five-goal Sun Devil charge in the second quarter pulled ASU within two at halftime, the Pioneers opened the second half controlling six straight draws and netting six goals of their own to put the contest out of reach. DU eventually outscored ASU 9-1 in the quarter to put the game away.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Pioneers opened the scoring around the 12 minute mark of the opening frame and quickly jumped on a 3-0 lead. Katie Haley scored first for ASU to make it a 3-1 game, followed by a free position goal for each team and it was a 4-2 game. DU netted their third free position goal of the quarter to lead 5-2. A final Pioneers goal ended the first quarter and the home team led 6-2.

ASU opened the second quarter with three goals in two minutes with scores from Gigi Gaspar, Teagan Ng, and Annie Haley to make it a 6-5 DU lead. A free position goal was DU's first score in the second quarter which pushed the lead back up to two. After a goal from Lydia Oldknow pulled ASU within one, Denver scored a pair to push the lead up to 9-6. Another Ng goal capped off the second quarter scoring and it was a 9-7 DU lead at the half.

DU opened the third quarter with four straight goals which pushed the lead to 13-7 and prompted an ASU timeout. The home team followed with two more goals, and the lead was 15-7. Sara Flobeck replaced Katie Vahle in net at the 7:05 mark in the third quarter. The first ASU goal of the third came from Katie Haley with just over five minutes left in the frame. DU finished with three more goals and their lead was 18-8 after three.

Vahle entered at goalie for the fourth quarter. Two DU goals in the frame put Flobeck back out in net. Shannon Urey netted a goal and Oldknow scored two more for a 20-11 DU lead. Denver ended the game with one last goal and the 21-11 score was final.

UP NEXT:
The Sun Devils will wrap up the regular-season road play against Pac-12 opponent Oregon next week. ASU will take on the Ducks in Eugene on Saturday, April 20 at 12 p.m. MST, which will be streamed on Pac-12 Network.

  • Denver is the seventh ranked team that the Sun Devils have faced this season. The team previously faced No. 11 Stony Brook, No. 6 Michigan, No. 11 Florida, No. 17 USC, No. 20 Stanford, and No. 20 Colorado. ASU is 0-7 against ranked opponents.
