TEMPE – Back in Tempe for the first time in three weeks, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo split its doubleheader against MPSF foe No. 5 California in a 10-8 result and managed to rebound against Ottawa-Arizona with an 21-7 win Saturday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
Sophomore goalie Sanne Keijzer shined in the conference match against the Golden Bears, tallying 16 saves against the aggressive California offense, and scored her first career hat-trick of the season.
Luca Petovary netted three goals against the Golden Bears, her 21st game this season with three goals or more in a contest, bringing her season total to 113. She added an assist, two steals, and two drawn exclusions against the Golden Bears. Millie Quin scored two goals and notched three assists for five points against California.
In the victory against Ottawa, four different Sun Devils tallied hat tricks in the win. Zoe Frangieh led the way with four goals and added two assists for six points which is a career high for the sophomore.
Petovary netted three goals for her 22nd game with 3+ goals, followed by Sophie Shorter-Robinson and Gabby Gaetano each scoring three goals apiece.
Junior Marie Rudasics tallied 12 saves in the win against the Spirit. The teams 21 wins is now tied for third most in a season in program history.

GAME 1: Arizona State 8, California 10
California opened with two goals at the 6:40 and 5:30 marks in the first quarter. The Sun Devils responded with Petovary finding the back of the net with just over five minutes to play to make the score 2-1. Cal scored one more goal with 3:06 remaining, before being stymied by the ASU defense for the remainder of the first quarter.
Petovary scored off a penalty shot with 6:04 left in the second quarter to inch the Sun Devils within striking distance at 3-2. The Golden Bears extended their lead to two with 3:17 remaining, but Petovary responded 30 seconds later with a bullet past the goalie, her third goal of the game. Cal squeaked two more goals before the half and looked to have a 6-3 advantage heading into the break until ASU goalkeeper Sanne Keijzer scored her second goal of the year to make it 6-4.
Quin got the Sun Devils off to a hot start, evading the Golden Bears defense and rifled a shot to the back of the net, cutting California's lead to one. The back-and-forth affair continued with Cal scoring and Millie Quin answering second consecutive goal to make it 7-6 with under two minutes to play in the third quarter. Cal tacked on an additional goal to make the score 8-6 heading to the fourth quarter.
Cal put the pressure on ASU by scoring in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter. After no scoring until the 1:03 mark, Cal added another goal to make it 10-6. Keijzer added two goals in the last 45 seconds for a hat-trick, with the Sun Devils falling to the Golden Bears 10-8.

GAME 2: Arizona State 21, Ottawa-AZ 7
After a slow start by both teams, ASU turned up the heat with five unanswered goals by Shorter-Robinson, Zoe Frangieh, Gaetano, and Featherstone to take a commanding 5-0 lead after the first quarter.
Frangieh kicked off the scoring in the second, followed by Ottawa's first goal of the contest. Gaetano and Kokorowski each scored a goal to maintain the Sun Devils' lead going into the half ahead 8-3.
The Sun Devils scored eight unanswered goals to start the third quarter, then Ottawa added their fourth of the game in the final minute of the third frame. Petovary, Quin, and Gaetano each added two goals apiece to lead the team with a 17-4 lead.
Ottawa struck first in the fourth but Petovary and Begg tacked on consecutive goals to keep ASU at a healthy 19-5 advantage. Ottawa and ASU traded goals for the last portion of the fourth frame, with Ottawa scoring twice and Frangieh and Zonnevald putting the finishing touches on a 21-7 victory.
