TEMPE – After splitting the weekend in California, No. 8 Sun Devil Water Polo returns home to host No. 5 California and Ottawa-Arizona in a pair of games at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon starting at 12 p.m. AZT, then competing against the Spirit at 3 p.m. that same day.

The Sun Devils are currently 9-0 at home this season and have outscored opponents 152-49 this year at Mona Plummer, and are 17-1 when scoring 10+ goals in a game. 

The Sun Devils are coming off a 15-10 win against No. 17 San Jose State, whereas Luca Petovary led the team with six goals. Last Sunday, Arizona State fell to No. 4 Stanford, 10-9 in a back-and-forth affair, with seven different goal scorers.

LAST TIME OUT:
Last weekend, the Sun Devils earned their 20th win of the season, and their first MPSF victory against No. 17 San Jose State in a 15-10 result. Luca Petovary led the team with six goals. The win also marked the seventh time in program history that ASU has reached 20+ wins in a season. Last Sunday, the maroon & gold battled No.4 Stanford until the final possession, falling 10-9 where seven different Sun Devils netted goals in the game, falling to 1-2 in MPSF play.

LUCA LEADING THE WAY:
The Senior continues her stellar senior season after breaking the MPSF and Sun Devil record for most goals in a game with 10 against Mount St. Mary's on March 1st. This past weekend against the Spartans, she posted six goals and became the all-time leading goalscorer with 240 goals, surpassing Addison McGrath's mark of 237. Petovary is currently at 110 goals this season, she's 10 away from breaking the MPSF record for most goals in a year.

Petovary currently has 317 points in her career, and is 32 points away from becoming to all-time leader in points in program history. She has 11 games with 5+ goals this season and has averaged 4.4 goals a game. She's been awarded MPSF player of the week three times this season.

CUTINO WATCH LIST:

Announced on March 14. Luca Petovary was one of 22 collegiate women water polo player to be named on the Cutino Watch List, recognizing the best collegiate water polo players in the country. Petovary currently has an MPSF leading 102 goals, 22 assists for 124 points.

DUO FROM DOWN UNDER:
After both competing together for New Zealand this past summer, Millie Quin and Sophie Shorter-Robinson rank second and third on the team in goals and points. Quin has tallied 60 goals through 25 games, which ranks 11th most in a season by a Sun Devil. She also has 95 points this season, which ranks seventh most in a year. She started the year on fire with five straight games with 3+ goals, and has eight multi-steal games this season. 

Shorter-Robinson currently ranks second in the MPSF conference with 28 drawn exclusions this season and has totaled a goal in 18 straight games.

SUN DEVIL OUTLOOK:
No. 8 Arizona State (20-5, 1-2 MPSF)
  • With a victory over San Jose State, it gave the Sun Devils their 20th win of the season, marking the seventh time in program history to reach the 20-win mark. It also marks 10 straight wins over the Spartans.
  • Sophomore Millie Quin has 13 games with 3+ goals or more and is currently second in the MPSF conference.
  • Graduate Lara Kiss leads the MPSF conference with 39 assists, and she also leads the conference with 23 field-blocks.
    • She's one of four players with double-digit steals.
  • Jasmijn Dikmans, Kat Featherstone and Alison Kokorowski have all tallied 10+ goals and 10+ assists this season as freshman. 
  • Shorter-Robinson is four goals away from 75 career goals.
  • All-time, the Sun Devils are 8-29 against the Golden Bears and are looking to break a five-game losing streak against California.
    • Whereas ASU is 3-0 against Ottawa-Arizona historically.
  • Arizona State is 4-0 this year when following a loss, and 12-2 when playing on Saturday's.
  • The Sun Devils defeated the Spirit earlier this season with a 23-1 victory.

OPPONENT OUTLOOK:
NO. 5 California (11-4, 1-1 MPSF)
  • The California Golden Bears fell in an MPSF conference matchup against No. 5 USC 8-7.
  • All 15 games for the Golden Bears have been against ranked opponents this season, including a 9-8 victory over then-No. 2 Hawaii on March 10.
  • California is 6-2 against like-opponents that the Sun Devils have played. Both losses have come against Stanford.
  • Goalie Isabel Williams currently ranks second in the MPSF with 187 saves. She's also been named MPSF Player of the Week three times this season.
  • Maryn Dempsey currently leads the team with 28 goals for the Golden Bears, she also leads with 39 points.
  • California leads the all-time head-to-head record over ASU with a 29-8 record, holding a five-game winning stream.
Ottawa-Arizona (7-12)
  • The reigning NAIA national champions defeated Redlands and Cal Lutheran earlier this month at the 2024 Tina Finali Tournament.
  • The matchup against the Sun Devils is their last before the NAIA Championships.
  • ASU is 3-0 all-time against the Spirit, defeating Ottawa-AZ, 23-1 earlier this year.
