IRVINE, CA – Continuing her sensational senior campaign, Luca Petovary was named to the 2024 Cutino Award Watch List Thursday morning. The Peter J. Cutino Award, named in honor of the late Hall of Fame coach, recognizes the best player in Men's and Women's college Water Polo, an award that debuted in 1999.
The senior is one of 22 athletes to be named to the Cutino Award Watch List, which is nominated by varsity collegiate coaches around the country honoring the exceptional play this season. The winners of both the men's and women's awards will be announced on June 1, 2024 at The Olympic Club City Clubhouse in San Francisco.
Petovary has accumulated 102 goals and 124 points so far this season, which leads the MPSF in both categories with averaging 4.43 goals a game. She has broken numerous records this season, which include the program record for most goals and points in a season and becoming the seventh MPSF player in history to surpass the century mark in goals. The senior has accounted for 31% of the team's scoring this season, and has helped the Sun Devils on the cusp of a 20-win season.
In a win against Mount St. Mary's, she accumulated 10 goals in a game, breaking her own record and setting the MPSF record for most goals in a game. Currently, she has 10 games with 5+ goals and has six career games with 7+ goals, five this season alone. She owns three of the top-four highest-scoring games in ASU history.
Petovary is currently five goals away from breaking the record for most goals in a Sun Devil career, holding strong at 232 goals in her four years in Tempe. She also became the second Sun Devil to surpass 300 career points and is 44 points from surpassing Sun Devil Hall of Famer Addison McGrath's mark of 348 points. Including her 102 goals, she's 18 away from breaking the MPSF record for most goals in a season.
