TEMPE, Ariz.- Arizona State (7-3) upset No. 7 Ohio State (6-4) by a score of 4-1, outpacing the Buckeyes in doubles and singles. With Sunday's victory, the Sun Devils avenged their January 27 defeat, when both teams met in the ITA Kickoff Weekend Tournament.

"We knew we were going to go there for the Kickoff Weekend," ASU head coach Sheila Mclnerney said. "We lost to them. And then to get them at home, it makes a big difference. Obviously, they play better at home and we play better at home. So our girls were waiting for this match.I think it was super important and I'm really happy for them."

ASU won the best-of-three doubles match with victories on courts two and three to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Giulia Morlet and freshman Sara Svetac won the first doubles match, 6-3, on court two. The duo of senior Marianna Argyrokastriti and freshman Emilija Tverijonaite clinched the doubles point, 6-3, on court three.

In singles play, ASU won three of the first four matches to secure the upset victory. The Sun Devils went ahead 2-0 after Tverijonaite took down her opponent, 6-1, 7-5, winning a back-and-forth second set on court four. Ohio State chipped away at their deficit, but Argyrokastriti's 6-4, 6-4 victory on court three put the Sun Devils' on the verge of clinching the match, ahead 3-1. The match came down to senior Rachel Hanford on court six. Hanford fought off a spirited rally from her opponent, but pulled away in the second-set tiebreak, winning 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), to win the fourth and final point.
