TUCSON, Ariz. - Sun Devil Men's Basketball suffered a 105-60 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Arizona in McKale Center on Saturday evening.
Arizona State (13-13, 7-8) opened the game showing no fear in an extremely hostile environment, but were unable to maintain the pace set by the Top-5 Wildcats. Head Coach Bobby Hurley's team will have a chance to avenge the loss when two sides will meet again in Tempe at Desert Financial Arena on Feb. 28 at 8 PM.
Adam Miller led the way for the Sun Devils, scoring 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting. He was one of three to finish with double figures in the scoring column, as Jose Perez delivered a 14-point effort and Jamiya Neal added 12 points and six rebounds. Frankie Collins added one steal to his season total, giving him 74 through 26 games. He is now two steals shy of tying Lafayette Lever's record of 76 set in 1981.
The Maroon and Gold initially matched the intensity of the home Wildcats in front of a sold-out McKale Center. The Sun Devils jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead behind the strong start of Jose Perez. ASU managed to push their lead back out to five, moving ahead 20-15 with 12:38 left in the first half. Foul trouble would plague the visitors the remainder of the half, a contributing factor to Arizona going on several scoring runs. Despite the efforts of Jose Perez (9 points) and Jamiya Neal (6 points & 4 rebounds), Arizona State went into the half trailing 49-31.
An 18-point lead proved to be insurmountable, as the Wildcats fed off the home crowd and controlled the second half. Adam Miller attempted to spark a comeback attempt, finishing with nine points after the break. Ultimately, the Sun Devils were unable to overcome a 32.1% shooting performance in the second half. Arizona State mounted several late comeback spurts, but were not able to cut into the deficit, falling 105-60.
